Just came in from outside, doing some mid-winter cleanup with my grandfather's Collins "Red Seal" 3 1/2 pound single bit axe.

Any info on this - where it was in the product range, dates, etc.? I believe it's pre-war but I could be guessing wrong.

Thanks!

The guys up at www.theaxehole.com might be able to shed some light on this for you. Ask for Doc. Jastad. He should be able to steer you in the proper direction. My guess is that this axe is about 60 years old or greater. The Collins company made some fine products over numerous years, and you own one of them. Cheers!

Yep, it was my grandfather's or earlier, so it'd go back at least to the 1930s, possibly earlier. He always swore by the tools that came out of the Collinsville factory, which wasn't terribly far away.

The site you mention looks like a great resource. I'll see what they can tell me - thanks for the lead!
