Colloidal Silver

Skip the silver. Especially ingesting it. Use it topically or better yet - get some real medicine.

Just my .02 fwiw

This.

Just because something doesn't directly cause deaths (but may through drug interactions), doesn't mean it is either safe, or effective. While there are many natural remedies out there (though rarely are they more effective than their commercial variants, I understand why people may chose them), this one has very limited use or demonstrated effectiveness, anecdotal evidence (which is not actually considered evidence) aside.

We DO know that it interacts with many antibiotics (quinolone types, as well as penicillamines, levothroxines, and tetracyclines) - so if you are taking an antibiotic related to your procedure, adding colloidal silver is likely to decrease its effectiveness, rather than supplement it.

With the exception of one footnote relating to a study in the Journal of Translational Medicine (the Wyss institute study, which they refer to several times - and which, interestingly, the Wyss institute itself, doesn't list in its publication listing), which investigates the use of one form of silver (not colloidal silver) in mice, I only found ONE article in pubmed which talks about silver, and it is in relation to lining catheters with it, not ingesting it, or using it topically.

So I maintain, that currently I find very little to suggest its use, and many reasons to suggest avoiding it.

You can't fix stupid.

Sometimes the only value a person will ever have in their life is their death and they can serve as an example to those of us capable of learning.

If anyone wants to ingest colloidal silver, go right ahead. If anyone wants to use it as a topical medication, go right ahead.

But please don't compromise your integrity and call 911 when you get sick or dying.

Just take it like a man and earn what you deserve.

My recent personal experience re: silver and skin wounds. Last week I cut my index finger while opening a vacuum packed bag of spareribs. My hand was covered in pork blood/juice before I realized I had cut myself. While the wound was not deep, I was concerned with infection because of the raw pork juices and washed the area thoroughly. I then put a small amount of silver gel on a bandaid and put it on the finger and returned to bbq'ing. That night when I removed the bandaid I was surprised to see the cut was completely healed with only a small line on my skin. Like I said, the cut was not deep but in 8 hours time had completely healed. I don't use it often, but the silver gel seems to promote healing.

I have nothing against modern medicine or 911. Lol. Cancer treatment center of America has moved in a direction of using natural organic foods, juices, and other methods with modern medicine. I believe many others will follow suit.

I believe when you understand how the human immune system works, and the effects of modern medicine, you'll see the benifits of the two being used together.

If I was to get into a car accident, or get shot, USA is number 1. In trama repair in the world. The best.

I don't think anyone would argue against that. The problems come in when people start to thing "all natural" automatically means better (Aspirin works better with fewer risks than willow bark tea, though they are the same active ingredient). Or start replacing modern medicine for acute illnesses and wounds, with folk remedies which, might help, but more frequently are ineffective but harmless, but sometimes can cause other issues (lack of consistency in the potency of the material/dosage errors, mis-identification, drug-interactions, impurities, etc.). As Tim Minchin so eloquently put it:

"By definition, Alternative Medicine
Has either not been proved to work,
Or been proved not to work.

You know what they call alternative medicine
That’s been proved to work?
Medicine."

This is not to suggest that there is not a place for it, but it is certainly a matter of knowing what you are getting into, and getting as much data as you can to avoid the more common problems and interactions.

In this case, since he has already had a medical treatment/surgery, it is not unreasonable to think that he was prescribed an antibiotic. Colloidal silver is known to interact with many types of common antibiotics, and thus would be counter-indicated, on top of it not being proven to be effective for the usages suggested.

Again where you getting your info? Experience, have you ever tried or even seen collodial silver? The most deadly drug interaction are from the pharmaceutical business, that is documented. By our own government.

Silver doesn't work all the time, but then again tell me a drug that does, silver works against viruses, drugs just mask the symptoms.

I can find no evidence beyond anecdotal claims that it is effective against viruses. It can have an antiseptic effect, depending on concentration, but that's against some types of bacteria only.

And yes, I don't disagree regarding the seriousness of problems relating to drug interactions. More people die from pharmaceutical based interactions because: 1: more people take pharmaceuticals. and 2: often they are more potent, and treating already very dangerous conditions. Natural things interact too - sometimes in ways we don't know about, at least we test and learn from the pharma ones. There is no such process for most natural remedies...so we don't know what we are dealing with, what doses, or even what active ingredients most of the time.

That is why when one is known (as the silver v/antibiotics interaction is well known and documented - it's even on WebMD, we don't need to get esoteric, but we can if needed), it should be avoided. Just like a known pharmaceutical interaction should be avoided.

I have seen it. I have not tried it. My trying it wouldn't matter as far as a recommendation to others goes though. There are too many variables and unknowns in any anecdotal recommendations - without double blind, controlled testing to back up the claims made, they remain hokum as far as I'm concerned. Show me studies (not articles, not sales websites, or natural health magazines...). Then we'll talk. That's the way it works - you are making the claims. You need to back them up with evidence...it's not on me to prove them wrong.

Talking with the friend that gave me this stuff they said it KILLS BACTERIA and will promote healing.

I am 5-6 weeks post op- I have a 5" scab that runs along my Achilles and goes down under my heel. The heel end looks good and is closed.....the very top part is also closed and looks good. There is a 1/2" or so in the middle that is giving me trouble because it's in a bad spot. The Dr. warned me of this before surgery. The problem I have is I walk for a living and I need this to heal quickly. Plus I am getting fat sitting all day! :D

Your on the right track at least asking about silver. some will make it rattle snakes in a bottle. The same ones who have never tried it or seen it, just skeptics. And that's ok. If I was in your physical shoes I would change my whole diet if you haven't already.

Whole foods, fruits vegetables, moderate meats, preferably organic. Tangy tangerine is a excellent product to take that gives your body a the vitamins and minerals to heal itself. It has all your B vitamins , I would also take Iodine. 96% of Americans are iodine deficient.
Monofletch, take a look at tangy tangerine, read the reviews. I have been taking it for about 6 months and I'm sold on it.
I have 6 jars coming in any day now, I'll be more than happy to send you one free of charge, my aim being you get better.
Look over the label lots of plant based vitamins and minerals, it also taste good. I'm positive this will only help your situation, defiantly not hurt it.

I wish you the best.

I'd skip the colloidal silver. At best it is a (poor) substitute for modern antibiotics. At worst it will turn you blue*. The use of silver as an antibiotic dates back to the days before we had stuff like penicillin. From the sound of it it isn't an antibiotic you need. What you need are topical ointments to speed up the healing process. Check with your doctor about what the right ointment might be. Also take your vitamins like Krav said.

I wanted to ask you guys about Colloidal Silver. I had surgery on my foot and I have a huge wound were the doctor went in to fix things. A friend gave me a big bottle of this to soak my wound in. She said it would heal it up quickly. I have never heard of it and I am afraid to use it until I find out more info. I did a Google search and read for a bit on the subject, but I wanted "REAL" opinions.

What do you think??

Colloidal silver can work as an anti bacterial but there are probably better things. Somebody here mentioned "Bacitracin" Avoid that unless your Dr prescribes it for you... You don't want to contribute to any antibacterial resistance and that my friend is a huge problem these days. Over prescription of "real" medicine can and has created problems such as the super resistant Mrsa. We usually have a nominal amount of staph aureus that occurs naturally on our skin but if the numbers become greater than our immune system can handle, we get sick from it. It usually resides on the outer layer of skin and if it is allowed to penetrate into the subcutaneous tissue (which is exactly what it can do with a wound) it (the wound) will become infected.

Regular cleaning with hydrogen peroxide will kill staph aureus on contact... and won't cause antibacterial resistance.

If you want to soak your wound, try Epsom salts.... (I borrowed this quote) "Epsom salts are crystals of hydrated magnesium sulphate. According to the Epsom Salt Council, epsom salt soaks can raise magnesium levels and improve blood circulation and skin integrity. (this alone is good reason for using them) Adequate circulation and oxygen saturation are necessary for wound healing. "Wound cleansing removes dressing residue, microbes, and cellular debris," according to the American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association. Epsom salt soaks may be a natural alternative treatment for wound healing."

(Oh and that bucket you plan to soak it in better be squared away and sanitary, scrub it clean with soap and water and a little bleach & dry it before you fill it up with anything ;) Put a nice and sterile gauze when you are done soaking.

Bacteria live in a very narrow band of PH so If (1) you can increase or decrease the ph it makes it harder for bacteria to survive (2) Improving circulation to the area is also very important, you need the blood to go in there and wash away as much of the cellular debris as possible on a regular basis. You don't want stagnant fluids in your extremities (foot in this case)

So unless you have a compromised immune system or a heart issue, you will more than likely provide plenty of circulation to heal quickly.

Stay away from topical antibiotics unless your Dr prescribed them for you & watch out for any swelling or redness around the wound... If any occurs, call your doc.

I hope this helps.

Get well soon!

Looks like a blue Santa Clause! :D

There is almost no evidence that silver is beneficial in treatment of infections or other health maladies and there are potential dangers. Look at the Cochrane reviews. It is an organization that reviews all the relevant literature on certain subjects (random controlled trials) and publishes summaries on the basis of evidence based medicine.

It has been a few weeks since I posted on this thread. As it turns out I didn't need to use the Colloidal Silver after all! I ended up tearing it all back open-requiring more stitches! Just my luck! :o
