Color Options for the Stock Grivory Scales

So, we know Ka-Bar has the capability to make the stock Grivory in other colors besides black, because of the (completely sweet looking) tan scales made for the tweens. Now, the question is when will other colors become available to purchase "a la carte"? I'm asking because I would like to put some pink Grivory on my girlfriend's 16 that I got her for Christmas. Plus, color options would be a great way to personalize Beckers for the whole family. If any of your families are like mine, and multiple members own the same model Beckers it would be nice to have them as personalized as possible. Just a thought. So, what are the chances Ka-Bar?

I love this idea. And it could be a cool, cost effective option as opposed to micarte.

I would kinda like to have micarte handles on my 9, or w/e my favorite Becker is at the time (21!), and some stippled tan or od green ones on the others :-)

Stock or inexpensive tan or OD scales would be awesome for the Becker line. Ka-Bar recently gave away a set of pink scales on their Facebook page and I do know that Camillus had some tan Grivory floating around with the desert edition Beckers, but I don't know if those were coated or not. Also, the various colored Benchmade Griprilian scales are Grivory. Yea, I could work with a set of blue Becker scales.

I'll probably go sticking my foot in my mouth here, but the scales on the tweeners as well as the scales made for the BK14 are Zytel.... Granted, Zytel is from Dupont and Grivory is from EMS-Grivory. Both are similar nylon resins. Aside from that, I have no idea about the differences between the two materials. They may be similar enough that there would be no real difference switching the large Becker scales to various colored Zytel scales. :foot:

In the meantime, Krylon fusion might work out to help you make a set of tan Becker scales. It seems to hold up well enough when appropriately prepped.

Again, :foot:, so your mileage may vary. :D

I thought about painting, but really didn't think it would hold up, and don't really want to lose any of the original texture. But, it may be my only option. I wonder if I could find any of those pink scales you mentioned from Facebook... Anybody seen them for sale anywhere?

Beach,

I have to say I'm totally against micarte now. I say this based on the fact that it is just too easy to contaminate with just about everything. Not to mention how expensive it usually is. I'd rather put that money towards a custom sheath. I like g10 a lot, but it has a slight potential for hot spots. The grivory, I've found, has much more grip than given credit for, and ,really, doesn't get hot spots at all. That said, I'm pretty much done with micarte.

Ka-Bar said it was a one-off set. They held a drawing for them a few months back. I'm not sure if they were coated or if they were made from pink material.

I bet they were testing the water on the interest for color options. Hopefully, they will be making an announcement at shot show about a new Becker scales line. :D Coated, or not, they looked good. I just searched a pic of them. If I end up with a set of those I just might have to get her a 9, or a 5.

I think stock scales for the whole line in 2 or 3 colors would be awesome. Awhile back I tried to buy a spare set of full-size Grivory from kabar and they didn't have any to sell me. I'd like to see them boost production of the scales to keep a little extra inventory for retail, and adding colors would be great.

the Blade Show 2009 sneak peak into new possibilities for micarta. As Toooj says "the CNC is programmed..."

We've seen enough "How It's Made" to know that the injection molded process just mixes in color beads to make any color desired. Since 2 color runs are already produced, other colors should be easy. The BK14/24 have optional factory Orange scales. Just throw some of those Orange beads into the Tweener's feed chute. ;)

Gee, BK-13's were just $5 at the show. ;)

I'd love a pair of orange grivory ones so I could then stipple them. Hate dropping things in the woods and not being able to find them.

Travis,

Those are died micarte, right? I don't want anymore micarte. I've decided it's an inferior material.

It's been brought up before. I would love to see some scales in OD. Here is a few renderings I did some time ago, when it was brought up to have some custom Beckerhead scales made:

The spray on plastidip is a good option for color. Its fairly durable and if it starts to wear you just peel it off and start again. There are quite a few colors too.

Point was - colored micarta was on display in 2009 and, since "the CNC is programmed...", colored micarta/G10/kirinite/etc shouldn't be an issue. At least, not a technical one. ;)

Hmmm ... would those be enough for a 3-D printer to work with?

CNC are already programmed so its just about getting the material and put it into the machine and get a few runs out of it. Like wise for the grivory which depends on the resin you pump in, I certainly see a demand for it but just that not sure if its big enough to make them give it a go.

I would love a few sets of orange micarta or g10 scales too, easier to find in case I forgotten where I left them when im packing up.

Maybe I'm just too simple minded, but I have such a hard time envisioning my Beckers in anything but black grivory or custom wood grips....

I really, really wanted those orange scales. So did a lot of other folks. OD would rock too.

I had a conversation with Ethan about this a couple years ago. I can't for the life of me remember what the reasons against it were, I was probably sober.
