colored epoxy

look up the nearest boat supply place in your area (Boats USA, West Marine, etc.) In the fiberglass repair section they carry dye for the resin. The dye will work in polyester or epoxy. They usually sell a small tube for about $8 or some times they will have a kit with 6 or 8 different tubes for about $20. Bass pro may also have something similar. I use black dye in my epoxy (I use Z-Poxy 30 minute) For a batch consisting of 40 drops of hardener and 40 drops of epoxy, one drop of dye, (it is the consistency of printers ink) will make the epoxy opaque. I usually mix the dye in with either the hardener or the epoxy prior to mixing the two together. If you warm the mix with a hair dryer (use good ventilation) until all the air boils out (only takes a few seconds). Every 17 degree F you elevate the temperature of the epoxy cuts the cure time in half! so don't heat it for an extended time. I suggest you experiment on something other than a knife for the first time or two. Good luck

I also know people who use layout chalk or other pigments and just mix them in with the epoxy.

While many things will work in coloring epoxy, most will affect the strength and curing ability. That is why it is best to get pigments that are made for epoxy resins, like Jim suggested. K&G sells a really good dry powder dye that works very well with epoxy. A toothpick tip of dye will color an ounce of resin.
