The KG Gunkote I use does involve some prep work, and baking time. You have to blast the knife with 120 grit Aluminum Oxide, apply the coating, let it dry, then bake it for an hour at 300 degrees. The coating is ultra-thin, threaded parts function together perfectly after application, and the stuff is actually more impervious to corrosion than stainless steel. There may be some coatings that are more abrasion resistant, but it would be tough to beat this stuff for chemical resistance. I haven't found anything that will eat it. You do need to have access to a sandblasting cabinet, airbrush, and oven to use it though, and also need to make sure you remove a handle that can't take the baking temps.
