I see knives made by Smith & Wesson and also Colt in a shop nearby. Do any of you guys have any knives by these names? Just wondering how you find them? I see they are of 440c steel, at least in the S&W?

cheap stuff...their fixed-blade should work, not garanteed to keep an edge... but i would not trust their folder.

Neither company makes knives. Other companies license the names and put them on their knives. Current S&W knives are made by Taylor Cutlery in China and Taiwan. Current Colt knives are made by, I believe, United Cutlery (owned by BudK) in China.

S&W knives are hit and miss. I've owned several. Some are great and others are junk. They are made in different factories at different price points and reflect it. The HRT series seem to be nice. I really like the SWAT knives too.

I have no experience with Colt knives.

My edc is a smith & wesson cuttin horse. It's a great knife and it keeps a good edge. The best part of it is that I got it for almost nothing. It's a little tank and I have had no problems with it.

Okay beaters & users. S&W's are what got me back into knives again. The HRT's are good, as Kiahs said, and I have an Extreme Ops that is built like a tank, good fit & finish, locks up like a bank vault. No play at all. I friend of mine manages a Big 5 Sporting Goods store here, and he sells S&W, MTech, and Colt, among others. The S&W's are rarely returned, The Colts barely sell anyway, and the MTech models they sell seem to get returned fairly regularly. So, of the three, S&W is the best bet, I think.

thx - cpr

I've got one of these as well and its good for what it is.

It goes back to you get what you pay for. I have bought four or five of the Smith and Wesson slipjoints for $5-$6 simply to use as "beaters". For the price and the purpose I bought them for I've been generally satisified, but they don't hold up to a lot of heavy duty use. I usually keep one in my car or truck -- they'll do in a pinch, but I wouldn't cry if they got lost or stolen.

I owned a S&W "SWAT" folder. Picked it up at the local flea market a long long time ago. Held up to moderate use, but the blade would neither hold an edge nor take one.

I think it's floating around in a junk drawer somewhere.

My S&W SWAT folder would pit on the blade edge:thumbdn: everytime I used it.It was only sharpened with a carbide tool. My little Schrade folder holds up better and cost way less.

I have two smith autos they hold an edge ok but I don't carry either of them tried to carry the small one once and it kept opening up in my pocket not a good situation .

This little Colt Taiwan made plunge locker has been laying around the house for years. It's a Fred Carter design and 440 steel that's supposedly Cryo treated.
It's actually very well made and locks up with zero noticeable blade play, one of the best Colts I've seen.

Check out how well centered the blade is

It's nothing great but not bad for a Colt, IMO.

I actually have quite a few of the S&W knives, both fixed & folder, and I haven't found one that I don't like...(They are all "newer" models, so that might make a difference.). They actually seem to be very well-made, most have 440C for the steel, and they don't carry a high price-tag.

These are the ones I have, copied from my "knife log" :

Smith & Wesson Big Texas Hold 'Em Bowie
Smith & Wesson HRT/DR Fighter (I have 2 of these)
Smith & Wesson HRT Dagger
Smith & Wesson ExtremeOps folder CK43BS (clip-point)
Smith & Wesson ExtremeOps folder CK5TBS (tanto)
Smith & Wesson Rescue folder SWHRTMG

I have a Colt Python2 "police" edition with the little CF scale. But it is made in Solingen, Germany and it has 440C I think and I like it I like it I have never really carried it but I like it enough to have bought it for about $30 from a friend.

Anyone have any experience with the Smith and Wesson M&P knives?

I have an M&P .. Not that impressed with it. Its not that fast at releasing the blade (compaired to my Kershaw) .. And when I close it, it makes a squeeking sound that I cant seem to find, and it gets annoying. Its pretty sharp out of the box, but I havent used it enough for it to need sharpening, so I can't tell ya if it sharpens well .. It says in my car as a quick blade

I have a large Smith and Wesson sheephorn stockman. It seems to be a very well made knife. However, it is not one that I carry, so, I can't speak to the edge. My dad has an older Smith and Wesson bowie (by Taylor), and he has used it to butcher deer in the past, and the edge has held up pretty well for him. I am very leery of their newer (especially tactical) knives.

I have a SWMP1BS... it was my first folding knife, before I knew anything. The assisted action was decent, but a little lackluster compared to my Leek. The torsion bar snapped within two weeks, however, so now it's just a non-assisted folding knife. The steel is decent (4034 I think), and the factory edge was actually pretty good. I really like the look of the drop point on this knife, although it may be a bit too tacticool for others. [http://www.madriverknife.com/proddetail.asp?prod=SWMP1BS&cat=21] The knife feels pretty comfortable in the hand, I like the grip.
