What do you want to do with this gun?? 24/7 carry, mostly range use with ocasional carry, maybe you're not even sure at this point.
I like 1911s I have a couple including two Colts, a Rail Gun and a Combat Elite, both are great guns. The weight and excellent trigger make a 1911 easy to shoot well on the range compared to some of the Double Action Only (DOA) or Safe Action Pistols. The safety does require practice, you need to develop that muscle memory to where you don't even think about it. You also need to have good form/grip so that you don't bump the safety up and lock up the weapon. These things all seem easy enough but try shooting under stress whether hunting, or competition, or (hopefully not) defending yourself and something as simple as the safety catch can become very complicated.
Anyway, not that the Colt isn't a good gun, I'm sure that it is, but there are better choices in my opinion. I know they're not as sexy but try looking at a Glock 27 or 23, a Springfield XD compact, Kahr, etc. They are all simple DOA (or Safe Action for the Glock) type trigger pulls, dead nuts reliable, and simple to use under stress, the .40 is a better defense round but more expensive to shoot and harder to shoot well in the small guns.
I have three carry guns... ...small, medium, and largeish. 90% of the time I carry the mediium Kahr PM9, a Kel-Tec P3AT in a pocket holster fills the small slot, and I have a Gock 23 for a full size or nearlly full size carry gun. Too bad you can't handle a few different guns or rent/shoot some.
