Combat Bowie disguised as Vest Bowie in Cru Forge V

Ah, OK - chromium, not vanadium... I knew it was one of the 'iums'. ;)

Thank you guys! :)
Buffalohump- quick answer is no, unfortunately.

The composition of the steel is very simple (pared down specifically to work well with the "backyard heat treat" set-ups many bladesmiths use). Chromium is the main deciding factor in a steel being stainless--- most cutlery grade ss has around 14-17% Chromium. CruForge only has 0.50%, which is the same as most melts of O1... so it is definitely not anywhere near a stainless.

The amount of vanadium added to the steel forms hard vanadium carbides in the microstructure... which is a fancy way to say it is VERY abrasion resistant... so it will stay sharp for a very long time.

Nice work, Nick! As for that steel, yeah, it is a bit testy when it comes to hand sanding. IIRC, they added the chromium in the last phases of development not only to get it to roll a bit easier, but also to make it more deep hardening.

Late..sorry.

Fantastic work as per usual and my steel question has been answered so..
I usually don't go for the smaller Bowie/Fighters but this one pushes all the right buttons, to say the least.

The gorgeous handle with the domed pin, (worth the extra effort to dome the pin imo), love your guards and your short
ricasso which I really dig, more sharpened steel on that killer blade shape with the wicked clip, along with your superb sheathwork makes
this one a home run in my book.

Thanks for sharing and showing, Nick.

Doug :)
