OK.
I want everyones' most serious possible opinion.
I want to know which HI khukuri you all think is the best choice for combat and survival in the wilderness.
Please only list one type and size and type of handle and tell me why you think it is the best.
Thanks.

WW 11 16 1/2 inch or M43[WW 1]

just my opinion :)

handle material not all that important. These are light to carry, and quick in the hand.

Hand to hand implies no weapons...did you mean a knife fight?

I've always thought a gun was the best weapon to have in a knife fight.:D

WWII would make a fine do-it-all for the woods situation, but I think any Khuk would be a great thing to have with you.

What do "ninjas" need Khukuris for anyway? Why not go with what is already being used for combat. 15-16in SN-2or SN-1(BAS) with a camo sheath.

I guess I will have to wait until I get a few more but I would say either a BAS or a WW2 pattern, the blades are broad enough to be used for chopping work, narrow enough to be light and handy, and can be used for fairly detailed stuff. Plus, as someone said, if you can't do it with the Khuk, you probably can with the Karda

I have a good BAS but the karda is small enough that I would rather use the one that came with my WWII. It is long enough and a bit heavy so it will do some serious work in the food preparation department.

My WWII in the 16.5" is just a bit heavy for what I really would like but it doesn't balance too badly for a heavy blade. So far if I use it on green wood for a while I don't have to do much sharpening. It just seems to stay sharp with use. If not a few strokes with the ceramic rod does just what it is supposed to do.

This is not the only khuk that I would gladly take into the bush but it is as good as any. I like the horn handles and that is what I have the most of. I treat them a couple of times a month and have never had any trouble with cracks.:)

Pipey,
Danny can't be a ninja because (1) he's a couple hundred years too young, and (2) he's not Japanese.

Danny, I've had several sirupatis, but I've given them away (usually to fellow Ninpo practitioners). They just don't feel...right to me, or at least they didn't, in the past. The 16.5" WW II just feel really good. It's quick but powerful, a feeling I really like in my knifes. My large GRS is extremely powerful- a one-handed ax, really- but it's too unwieldy for anything other than a headsman's implement, when it comes to it. The M43 is beautiful, but awkward (my impressions, here, guys.) My 18" Chitlangi feels pretty good, too- I wrapped the handle and tip of the scabbard with grip tape both for better purchase, and to kill the glare.

The BAS ain't a bad choice. Should be light but fairly powerful.

John

-Ah. All my kuks have wood grips. The WW II's is quite slim, and feels just right for my hand.

Whomever comes visit me in Japan first gets to tell me i Aint a ninja, deal ?

I just got hooked up with a nice horn handled Bura BAS.
I think it will satisfy all of the requirements, and so far everyone seems to agree that it is one of the top three all-around best khukuris to go with for combat/survival.
But please tell me if you have any other ideas on the subject.

Thanks for the help !
Merry Christmas!

although not a khuk, (but it does have the sword of shiva and the cho). Medium-size khuk chopping power and prybar durability (1/2 inch spine on mine) more versatile than a khuk and weighs in at 1.5 lbs, for 16.5 inches.

Just out of interest, what Khuk would you guys recommend for one who is smaller than your average bear? To be frank I am a short-arse with relatively small hands, a nepali sized handle fits my hand erll enough, I was just wondering which of the smaller knives that would probably work for me you guys reckon would be best for 'woodsmanship' so to speak (fieldcraft is probably a better term).

On the subject, took my BAS out the other day for some 'chopping' (needed to pick up a new staff), it felt far more at home in the woods than my room, strange that.

I'd vote for a Bura 17" pound and a half Ganga Ram. It's not pointy like an M43 but the edge is really sharp and it can chop or light enough for machete work too.

... which HI khukuri you all think is the best choice for combat and survival in the wilderness ...
Danny ... my choice is 18" oal 1.25 lbs wood handled Gelbu Special!
... what Khuk would you guys recommend for one who is smaller than your average bear? ...
Bura made this one for me ... who is smaller than your average bear! It has the mix characteristics of AK, Siru, Chainpuri and WW II!

Danny, StmmZaum ... I guess it's time to order it after christmas!

As shown in Pendentive's relative size hand poll, I have one of the smaller hands of the forumites. :(

I've found the 15" khuks to have the best fitting size. Although some of the 16.5" ones are fairly small too. For me I like the lighter 15" AKs somewhere around 21oz or so. I reckon they balance better for me. They just seem to feel correct. The only reason I'd choose the AK over the BAS is blade shape.

My opinions are subject to change. A year or two ago I would have said BAS.

StmmZaum?

You simply have to get a 12 inch AK. You will fall in love.

Danny? The BAS I had was VERY quick, the balance was close to the hilt, an attribute a weapon-user would appreciate, I think.

StmmZaum,

It's hard to think of a better kuk for you than the BAS. Of my kuks, my WW II has the slimmest grip.

I personally prefer 18" blades. The balance and pluck for buck, ( in this case the weight of carrying.)are about right.

The Chitlangi and Gelbu are light and fast and have reach, but haven't we fortotten the UBE with its upturned tip? Better in a fight, I'm thinking.
