Combat knife recommendations...

Many good suggestions here. If price is an issue, you would do well to consider Swamp Rat Knife Works which, IMHO, offers about the toughest fixed blade knives for the price. Also to be considered would be the Camillus Becker line, especially the C/U7 and the Buck-Strider Solution.

If you are willing to spend (and risk) more money, the Busse Natural Outlaw or Steel Heart would be my choice with Chris Reeves also to be considered.

I would also take a Leatherman Supertool and a good folder, perhaps a Sebenza. Again price will affect choices, but a Steel Heart, Supertool and Sebenza would do you well afield.

'Xactly what I was going to say. I have the Camp Tramp (7") by SRKW and it's EXCELLENT. Tough. Hard Worker. Get some 600 or 1000 grit sand paper and a mouse pad as a sharpener. It's all you'll need. If they limit blade size look at the Howling Rat.

For the money the CS Trail Master in Carbon V or the Swamp Rat would be a good choice.

I just read a review comparing a CS Trail Master to the Bussie #9...very good review..:D

I was suprised that the Trail Master held up to the Bussie at well as it did, the Bussie costs over twice as much as the Trail Master.

Bottom Line is the Trail Master is one tough Bowie knife for the money.

A cold steel tanto

a long proven track record, not overly expensive

tanto=sharp edge, strong blade, good point

what more would you need?

learn to use your knife, the japanese have used their blades for centuries, and it is an integral part of their culture

refinement of an art form

perfection of character

i trust myself to my tanto and my ability to use it. Tam

Theese are what I have carried and will recomend:
fixed
Fallkniven A1 - Good all around knife
Fallkniven H1 - shorter but stout and it cuts deep for the style
Peltonen M95 - Good all around knife Costs 45-50eur oconus
Cold Steel Recon Scout - beefy but sharp gets heavier by the mile
M7 bayonette - sharpen it and train SGM won't think twice when he sees it
Cold Steel PeaceKeeper CarbonV - best dagger I've carried and a decent all around knife not a pry bar but thats its only limit
folders
Swiss tool - its what my entire Plt carries never broken one or seen it done
bm721 high CDI factor
CRKT Kasper - opens fast cuts long and deep. beefy enough for heavy use
Timberline Wortac - see above
Buck 110 - 100,000,000 fathers and grandfathers can't be wrong

I will add that the Simonich Ravens and the Green Beret Knife look pretty good - if you can get a hold of one do it. I will also advise you to take two knives or have a second homestation and ready to ship. The higer the CDI factor the more likely that your going to lend it to one of your buddies without telling yourself.

Alot of folks worrying about spending too much money on a combat knife around here. Not saying to go and bust the bank and spend the next few months rent...But were talking about a blade you want to maybe save your's and your buddies hides.
Think about it this way, if you were a mechanic, you would spend money on your tools, right? So as a mechanic you would want the best or you would be replacing them all the time as they broke. Same with a combat knife, BUT the local knife store is about 5000 miles away and you can't replace the knife that you just broke or lost becouse it came with a POS sheath.
Keep it on you at all times and treat it the same way as you would any weapon and you won't lose it or have it stolen.
Never lend it to anyone, even your closest buddies will not treat your stuff the way you do. The guys that have the most crap to talk about your knife will be the first ones to come and ask to use it...send them away or you will see your knife come back all #@&*ed up.
Buy it ASAP so you can do some trial and error as far as placement on you and your equipment. Put it on your line 1 gear, pants belt. So no matter how much gear you have or don't have on you it will always be there. Yea it can be a chore finding a way to keep it accesable but it will be there when you need it. You could always buy a second sheath to put on your LBE/VEST so you can bring it to the outside when in full kit.
If your Chain of Command is limiting the size/type of blade you can carry/use, you are probably in the wrong unit.
Don't get lazy, if after 100 days of toting your knife around and you one day don't feel like the extra weight, that will be the day you will need it. Good luck and have fun. Dean
