i am looking for a knife that will perform well in close quarters combat, but also something that can be used as a survival tool. i am new to this forum but your input would be greatly appreciated.

Is this for military service, which service, what are your anticipated threats, what level of training do you have, what kind of survival situations do you expect to find yourself in.

Going to go out on a limb here and say buy 2 buck nighthawks and have both professionally sharpened. You'll be good to go for a long time with that set up. Add in a on scene tactical kydex sheath and you're golden.

The nighthawk is a tough use combat knife ... period.

You can find video reviews on youtube that are impressive enough. If you want something else I'd opt for a RAT (model depends on size needed). Personally I would feel far from naked with a RAT 3 or 4 and would not want to haul around a 5 or 6. If you were willing to take the weight of the RAT 5 or 6 then I'd tell you to get a becker bk7.

If you are not serving in the military I would recommend a hollow handled saw backed "Rambo" knife for your survival/close quarter combat needs. Maybe something with a cool camo coating and lots of pointy bits sticking out of it.

If you are in the military, use the weapon you have been trained to use and pick up a good multitool. I consistently hear from current and former military that is what is or was most useful to them.

If I were looking for a close quarters combat knife that I knew I was gonna fight with but also needed to be a capable survival knife, I really like the looks of the Busse Hellrazor.

Problem with the question is that I would bet the number of members here who have had occasion to use a knife in combat are about as plentiful as lips on a chicken. So my thought is that obtaining a answer based on experience might be somewhat close to impossible :D.

Good combat knife? Only 2 valid choices. RAZR & WASP.

Oh- and maybe a SMATCHET will do as well.

Kind regards,

Jos

Time to revive the Smatchet thread!

Or the J. Lightning thread. :D

Is this a reference to "Jewish Lightening"? :D

My wife is an accountant and told me this is a widespread phenomena.

the thing about the rambo knives is they are far too large and slow for combat, i would rather have a shorter blade like 4 1/2" cuz its much easier to handle and quicker to unsheath. its like a revolver with a short barrel vs one with a long barrel, its faster on the draw. i personally dislike the rambo knives, they are very unpractical. i thank you for your opinion though

Just thought of that horological term applying to all those people wearing shiny Seamaster Pros, Superoceans and Subs.

Desktop Divers.

No idea what triggered this mind-spin. ;)

I'm one too. I wear a Sea Dweller. I equate depth rating with quality.

That's why God created bayonets ;)

I agree hollywood carry is on the shoulder but ive seen plenty of footage on iraq and afghanistan where soldiers are carrying knives this way so are they just following hollywood?

Pretty much. I carried a Native and Surefire on my vest. MT D/A Socom in pocket.

I have never been in combat (other than a few domestic disputes) but the Blackjack Halo Attack looks like something I might want to consider. A large strong blade, reputable company and prooven tactical design.

If you can afford it some Busse and some customs would fit the bill.

How about a Dark Ops like this?

Its got writing on it...so it must be "battle ready"!

You might want to check out the Himalayan Imports section. The Khukuri has a very long and fearsome reputation for close quarters combat, and is a time proven design. The Ghurka soldiers have used it extensively in combat, and they are VERY well known (and feared) around the world.
