I was just going to mention Dark ops. Extrema Ratio, Mantis, or Mtech are also perfect for what it seems like you are looking for.

Anyone read the latest tactical knives issue? A couple of interesting observations. One was that while rare, knife combat is occurring in Afghanistan, usually indoors already at close quarters when the rifle jams or the barrel gets deflected to the side in a tight spot. All ground pounders are not issued a sidearm. One thought put forth was that those with no sidearm should carry strong side right where an issued sidearm would be, in a snap sheath. Another observation was on another knife combat school of thought that promotes multiple rapid deep stabs to incapacitate as opposed to the muscle group targeting that may be more effective with shorter tactical folders. For myself I'd carry a tomahawk for tool and survival, a pocket multitool, and a robust combat blade around 6 inches or better from Busse, Swamprat, or Scrapyard knives.

i am looking for a knife that will perform well in close quarters combat, but also something that can be used as a survival tool. i am new to this forum but your input would be greatly appreciated.

CQC with who? Survival where? I gather you're not talking home invasion protection so is the hypothetical scenario: barfight; backalley; "Deliverance" country; or the Sandbox? Are you seriously seeing yourself in a CQC situation where you have to use a knife against a druggie with a 45 in your face; hillbilly with a 30-06 or a fanatic insurgent with AK47? Stab someone in a bar and it's "Go directly to jail - do not pass GO!" - and you will definitely not collect $200.

In the extremely unlikely event of having to actually use one in CQC - is there such a thing as an ideal knife ??? Almost impossible to answer because the suitability of any knife for a CQC situation also depends heavily on your skills and the actual scenario.

Get your priorities straight. Any knife you choose should be selected for the mundane tasks you will be using it for the majority of the time: carton cutting; bushcraft; utility. God help you if you ever need to pull it in a fight - I doubt either circumstances or the law will be on your side

I have never used a knife in combat, but I used to be a prison guard. I also used to hunt wild hogs with a knife. About anything stuck in you will kill you. Toothbrush etc. My standard Ka-Bar did well on hogs. Nothing fancy but it worked.

What do you plan on engaging in combat with.

I fought a tree branch with my Fallkniven F1 today. I totally won.

Go for the Benchmade CSK in 1095 carbon steel. Its a steal for $70 and the right candidate for combat and survival situations.

Hmm. Perhaps the question should be "best ego-bolster" then? :D

Something with a blade between 6 and 8 inches would be the range to look in.

A K-Bar or a CS Recon Tanto would be two good choices.

Another good brand to consider would be Entrek. Their Mk 11 series looks like the kind of knives a soldier could use.

I know it is a bit Hollywood to keep the knife on your shoulder. However, close combat between finnish and soviet soldiers during WWII showed that you should carry your knife easily accessible. If the bad guy get so close to you that he can reach your knife, then you have lost anyway.

I seem to recall a famous Finnish soldier who dispatched many sentries quietly with a knife in WW2. I don't remember his name, he considered 6 inches to be the best length. It was long enough to hit major organs/arteries from any angle, but not too long to be unwieldy.

the thing about the rambo knives is they are far too large and slow for combat, i would rather have a shorter blade like 4 1/2" cuz its much easier to handle and quicker to unsheath. its like a revolver with a short barrel vs one with a long barrel, its faster on the draw. i personally dislike the rambo knives, they are very unpractical. i thank you for your opinion though

Yeah, you're dead right for blade length. In my experience, you're either nearly touching the guy or far enough that a few extra inches isn't going to matter (except, as you said, negatively by being unwieldy). Another consideration is some knives have finger grooves, and on a quick draw you're not necessarily going to have the time to grab it correctly, so knives with handles like the picture posted don't work (not that it was a serious example).

I'm not sure what you're looking for the survival aspects of the knife, but for a fixed sd knife, check out http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=263. The choil is not necessary for its use, but it actually makes it easier and quicker to draw. The balance is perfect, the clip on the sheath changes angles, the blade slices amazingly, it's quite light, and to me it's just about the perfect size (it looks much bigger than it really is, and I highly suggest looking at comparison pictures, like the ones here http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41171).

Entrek makes a good knife. I like the Force Recon and the Merc II.
