Hello all,
I am a martial artist and outdoorsman and I wanted to know what is the best Kukri for chooping and martial arts combat training.
Thanx all

Go to HI homesite and read. The sirupati is favored by martial artists, but there are many other blades too.

try the Sirupati, Gelbu special, or Kumar Kobra. In the 18-21 inch range, they are susually under 2lbs.

If you like the shorter blades, a MA guy that buys HI uses the BAS. The longer ones are like short swords, and behave like that.

The HI tarwar is a nice shwort sword, but does not have the bent blade of the khuks.

Welcome to the Cantina. Let's see, you want the best khuk for chopping, that's probably a 20" Ang Khola. And, you want the best for martial arts, that's probably a 20" Kobra. Can only afford one to do both? I'd take Munk's advice and go with a Sirupati, probably the 18 incher. Just my rambling, your results may vary.

Sarge

For chopping, you probably want something heavier. The Ang Khola (AK) is a champion chopper. World War II is also good.

Martial arts: lighter, quicker khuks tend to be favored. Sirupti is probably the heaviest in this class. Gelbu special and Kobra are lighter. Chitlangi is somewhere in here, but I don't really know much about it.

If you want a khuk that will do both well, get a WWII or longer Sirupati.

Actually, for chopping, I'd prefer Sarge and the 20" AK as a package machine.

It is interesting to note that Silverfalcon leaned towards the heavier Sirupati and Gelbu and et al when he was 'over there".

Yes, Sarge, I've been paying attention.

I forget his noam but the Bando Master Uncle Bill knows uses the WWII.
He has 2 matching ones!

is a good do anything blade. I like my 18incher a great deal. It bites deep in wood and it's pretty quick. My sirus are both 25", lots of leverage for chopping but not quick. Welcome aboard.

Frank

edit: Pala says the Gelbu Special is what should be issued instead of the BAS. I trust his experience. Although I think the khuks that have seen the most combat are the WWII and the BAS.

Thanx all. It seems the WWII is the one most like for combat. I would love to have two one for training and one for the outdoors but budget allows for one. So WWII would be the one everyone like for both duties? I just want the right one. I am very excited about getting one since I have only trained with katanas and wakisashi' the challange of learning with the kukri..... WOW I cant wait. It seems also everyone likes the 18" AK for choping but do you think it is to heavy for martial arts?

Thanks for good help, all. WWII is good choice. Duvon Winborne is the Bando guy who uses them and should be here this weekend to demo use of them.

How large are you? Height, weight, age, condition?

For me, the 16.5" WW2 gives me a confidence no other khuk does. Not for defense but as a grab and go anywhere, and it'll do the job. I like the 18" WW2, and am finding I can choke up or down on it as needed. I like the m43 I have or a 19" village sirupati. For pure defensive fighting I have a little 12" Sirupati that has a vicious personality and can be concealed and strike without warning. For open carry there's a 17" 14 ounce Chainpuri that is unbelievably quick.

The problem you will probably find is that these have been made for years by hand forging, and it seems like each one has it's own personality. We're talking mystical stuff here, but you will know when the right one comes along, and you pick it up. I have one that when I pick it up I feel like Arthur Pendragon holding Excalibur for the first time.

Incidentally, the addiction you've noticed is called HIKV ( Himalayan Imports Khukuri Virus ). So far it seems to be incurable. That's why Uncle Bill takes good care of his customers. 80+ % of his trade is repeat customers.

cant go wrong with a 16.5" WW2, great balance and cutting ablity... i havent got a chance to play with a 18" WW2.. but the 16.5" sure doesnt leave me wanting.

There are so many good weapons to choose from that with out handling some of them it is hard to tell what you are going to wind up with just making a choice. If you are in real good shape the heavy WWII is a very good tool for all round use 18"..

The best advice that I can give you right now is to let Uncle Bill send you a knife that fills the bill for what you say you want the knife to do. I don't know of anybody that has done this and been sorry they did. I don't know how he does it but he makes the right choice for a lot of people. Can't do much better than that on the first khuk.

Welcome to the cantina. Stick around, you may get to like it here. :) :D

The part that everyone is maliciously avoiding mentioning, is that there is NO SUCH THING as 1 khukuri.

I'm sorry, if I can save just one wretched soul from hovering around this forum, starting from about 0930 PST every day, praying that Uncle Bill won't post something that he has to have (or finds mildly interesting), praying that somone else will speak for all the specials before he can collect his dazzled wits, then I feel that I've done a good day's work. (oh, BTW, less competition, too).

Welcome, dj. It's a fun, enlightening, useful place to hang out.

WOW all I can say is WOW,
I have been collecting blades and swords for about 5 years. When a freind from india told me about kukri' and showed me a pix I needed to learn more. Tonight you all have help so much. But you all have done something very bad. You all have started me down the path of kukri obsession. My wife is going to kill me. I told her no more blades for awhile. Oh well. To get her off my back I will only get one this month. So I need to narrow it down to the best chooper and heavy blades I love. I think everyone is saying to go with the WW2. I am fit age 35, martial artist and I lift 4 days a week. I also want it to handle well in the outdoors. But my main reason for my first kukri must be it's swing in combat but with good chopping capabilities . I know thats a lot. But again I cant thank everyone enough for all the advice.
