Combo guns

The thread on .410 shotguns has brought to mind a search I've been on for a long time. I've often really liked the idea of the combination shotgun/rifle type guns, but am unable to find exactly what I want.

Does anyone know if any company makes or made a combo gun with a .22LR or .22Magnum (preferred) rifle barrel ON TOP, and a 20 or 12-gauge shotgun barrel UNDERNEATH?

Seems all the rimfires are mated with .410s, and most manufacturers put the shotty barrel on top.

Reason I want this setup, is I want the precision out of the rifle barrel for small game, and I want to reduce tha parallax by having the rifle barrel on top.
I want the heavier gauge shotgun barrel on the bottom, so i can deliver a good shot load, and also use respectable slugs. That way I have a gun that can take both small and big game, instead of one optimized for small game or big game, but not really good for the other.

savage 24f-20 is avai in a bunch of diff options including .22lr over 20 gauge they are expensive but can be special ordered at Wall e world
Biakal 94 izh-sever is .22 over 20 guage
Remington spartan spr 94 makes a .223 over 12 gauge

I think Savage still makes the O?U I had two of them. One was 30-30 over 20 Ga and the other was 222 over 20 Ga. I really enjoyed these guns. I guess the next best thing would be the Encore or Contender with interchangeable barrels. I have one NEF rifle with three barrels. 45-70, 30-30 and 357 Maximum.

The Remington Spartan line also offers a few combo guns in both 22lr and 22mag.

The older Savage model 24's are much lighter then the newer synthetic stock versions. In my area the older model 24's go for arouns $250-$350.

The older Savage model 24JDL I used to own was a 22mag/20ga gun.

Thanks, maybe I have to buy used? I couldn't find the model 24 on Savage's website.
I looked at the Remingtons, but the .22 rimfires are all over .410s, and the higher gauge models all have the shotgun barrel on top, and a centerfire underneath. Also, the Baikals have the .22 on the bottom.

ETA: OK just checked out Gunbroker on the Savages, looks like a model 24 is my Huckleberry.
Thanks for the help guys.

Part of my problem with combo's is size plus it's hard to get a combo gun that maximizes range and accuracy from two separate barrels; the idea is sound the execution is difficult. About the two best options are Savage's model 24 series and Remington's Spartan 94 series. The Savage models have the rifle barrel over the shotgun barrel, which I too think is better but some will say you want the shotgun barrel on top because a good scope can reduce the parallax distance from eye to bore...6 one way, half a dozen the other.

My issue comes back to size. I like the Savage models, but they are pretty large for a rabbit, small bird or squirrel gun. I've often thought of getting a newer 23F (.22LR and 20 ga) and having the barrels cut down to 18" and try making the stock even lighter. Unless you have two sets of dedicated sights (iron and optics) for each barrel, you really don't aren't going to get maximum performance out of a combo gun. I like to see a combo gun as a short range forager and would be more than happy with slug and rimfire accuracy out 40-50 yards and decent shot patterns at 20-30 yards; that's why I'd like a more compact package because of what my requirements and expectations are.

Now, with that said, I just received my little M6 Scout in .22LR/410, so that's my idea of a compact foraging gun:thumbup: I would like a smaller combo with 20 gauge as it does give you a significant increase in range and more slug weight for larger game, but for now I'll see what my M6 can do. You can almost get more out of a single barrel shotgun ANDa .22LR pistol:confused: But the idea of a combo is quite appealing:D

Do take a look on Gunbroker...search for Savage 24 and their are several currently listed; prices range from $350-600.

Is it just my area, or have the savage/ stevens over under combo guns went up in price quite a bit over the last few years? Normally, the cheapest i see them for at gun shows is 350.

Yup.

Old Model 24s are going up, in part because the newer models are so much heavier, and frankly, bugly.

I have two old model 24s. : 22/410 and 22/20. Neat guns, but even they are heavy compared to carrying a single shot 20 or .22.

I really don't use the .22/.410, just can't bring myself to sell it. :)

But they are pretty: great wood, well-crafted, and versitile.

I would get one of the older ones, even at the premium, but then, I like old guns.

I never quite could get my head around a .22/.410 combo. Now, that .223/20 might make me take a look around the nest gun show. Still and all, a single barrel 20ga with a screw on choke set might make me happiest as a foraging/wilderness gun.

Lots of various flavors of Savage 24's on gunbroker.

Thanks to your interest I just put in a bid on a takedown guide to the Savage 24 also. That might come in handy someday!

I have a savage .223 / 12ga and found an adapter shell to shoot .22mag perfect but kind of heavy to carry all day
