Me: Ka-Bar is sending me some stuff to give away. Send me some out-there contest ideas. I'm talking gender swapping and body shaving kind of stuff.
TW: Cucumber carving. Best original carving using a cucumber and a Becker knife. Keep it clean.
Me: On it. I'm thinking there's going to be some cross-dressing too.
TW: Yeah, what could possibly go wrong with cucumbers and cross dressers?

Okay, it's true. There's a big box of steel in my living room, and tradewater's cucumber carving may materialize as an actual contest, so you can start practicing if you want.
In the meantime, let's get meta with a contest about contests. I want more ideas. Serious contests. Silly contests. Anything in between.
The contests should be legal/safe and should involve a Ka-Bar/Becker blade of some sort.
If your contest is selected to run, you'll receive a Ka-Bar Jarosz Folder (7505). Will get some pics up of the prize soon.

I'm going to post this one in the Ka-Bar subforum as well. But there can only be one winner!

meal cooked outside over fire -- must include using something you made.
some form of Kabar product must be used either in food prep or in making the thing.
no commercially made gas/liquid stoves or firepits allowed.

I've always wanted to do a plane crash scenario. Use only what you can take on an airplane to survive. That wouldn't include a Becker though so wouldn't work.

How about a doppelgänger contest where you have to use your Becker / KaBar knife to carve a copy of itself out of whatever media you choose to use. That could be interesting.

Looking forward to seeing what people come up with. Should be fun.

The United States of BK&T

Post a picture of a Becker knife along with something that best represents the state you live in.
Members could make it fun or serious.
It might be neat to see what gets posted across America.

if a commercial plane, you'd likely not survive? but could raid the checked luggage (Lost)...

small planes get lost a lot, and you'd have all your toys with you (alaska field trip, so you might have more than most, but perhaps it was scattered)

i'm thinking of a contest that involves a black hood, a video camera, and a big knife...

no wait, that was a tv show...

speaking of tv shows...

re-create a scene from a tv show where having a knife was a critical moment in getting the job done or the hero protagonist would perish or let people die/etc. cite with video, then recreate. it would be to be more complicated than cutting a seatbelt or making dinner. or perhaps we propose 50 best such scenes and the mod(s) pick a couple.

like ... predator - rig an elaborate trap (non lethal to you)

like ...

Dexter?

Instead of a traditional contest, I think a "Show us what Bushcraft you're doing" thread would be cool. That way we get to see what people are already doing, presumably with practice/skill. Just have to be clear about who gets to pick the winners, based on what general criteria.....

Best photoshop job installing Ethan's face into Mt. Rushmore.
(includes a Becker but not 'a Ka-bar')

Forge any large 1095CV Ka-bar knife into a wraparound tomahawk, send all entries to Guyon and Daizee for testing. (must make two of each effort in case they're worth keeping)

Chop offshore'd hardware store folder into tiny pieces with BK-2. Greatest number of pieces wins.

Make a functional bow out of correct wood for Daizee. Will send you my measurements. Be sure to include arrows. (no chatting!)

Lol'd at Dexter, loved the show. McGyver, too. Let's see...how about packing 3-5 different size BK's in a backpack along with camping gear, go out and camp at least for a weekend and have to use all the knives you took with you, including folders. Make forks, spoons, a perimeter spike fence around your tent/hammock (got me thinking about predator!), etc.

Or, use a KB/BK you wouldn't normally use to baton with, and baton pieces of wood to create a birdhouse feeder held together with strings, bubblegum, vines, spit, etc.

I always liked this thread and wished it had gained more traction.
A contest in the spirit of this could be interesting...

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1282895-Beckers-with-BH-numbers

Definitely force folks to get out with their Beckers and maybe have it on their mind while out and about. Cool thing is, much of it would be spontaneous when someone happens to see their number.
Winners could be chosen on creativity, most dangerous, or whatever criteria the judges decide to say it was based on when the winner is posted lol.

Using a Kabar/Becker knife to create some form of trap/snare and show what has been caught using said snare. Or kabar knife throwing??

To me, this contest should embody the respect, integrity and welcoming feeling that Ethan Becker himself displays whenever there is an opportunity to do so. Be it an issue with a knife to a gathering to a phone call, You always get the same guy (Thankfully).

The contest can have so many variables that it would be hard to even know where to start, then t worry about how to judge them?

How about we make it something a little more expansive while being a little more pure at heart?
What makes you happy?

Is it:
A firepit in the yard with family?
A 20+ mile ruck for a weekend camp?
Is it cleaning your dinner at a camp site or in a kitchen?
Do you work with a landscaper and use a BK5 for brush?

How do YOU enjoy your Becker?
How does Your Becker pull it's weight and what do you use it for?
Pics! WE MUST HAVE PICS!

Edit to add:
No contest is crazier than than one with this much leeway granted.

I got one. Go out and stay a night in the woods with only what you can fit into a one gallon ziplock bag. We'll call this, the ziplock challenge.

Go spend a night in the woods with a Becker knife, clothing for the time of the year, and gear for the night that costs less than 20$. Show what you bought with the 20$ and put it to work. Becker knife not part of he 20$.

One month challenge; only use a Becker knife for all cutting tasks and photo/film document the month.

Bonuses for outrageous achievements like a week in the woods with just a knife and a ziploc or carving a cucumber into a replica of your knife.

There are actually a good amount of ideas here that I would not mind attempting!

I'm thinking back on what the contests used to be like and I recall Ethan, and Moose, wanting us to work on or learn skills that we use in the bush.

One thing I'm thinking it's shelter building. Not just a simple lean to, but something a bit more substantial/sustainable. There are all kindsa options out there for shelters to build. I'd like to see a month long shelter building contest.

Use a Becker knife to carve, whittle or fashion a Becker (or Kabar) knife out of wood.
Best facsimile wins....

Making primitive weapons, Wild edibles identification, tree identification, different types of fire lay setups. Basically anything to LEARN things.

An overnight with minimal gear challenge is always fun. Especially if the skills that are used on the trip were learned in previous challenges.

How about wildlife photography? Maybe wildlife selfies displaying how close you got to a wild animal? Bonus points for slathering yourself with jelly in bear country.

I like carving contests. Show you latest figure/spoon/face/bear/whatever carved using your BK's. Maybe the best carved caricature of Ethan? As much as I like the idea of spending a weekend out with minimal supplies, this allows those people who are currently under a foot of snow to participate as well :)

Or just fill a big jar full of jellybeans and guess the number...
