Comfortable fixed blade carry

Hey everybody!
First post, ooh tingly.

My question, is how do I carry a 4.5 inch (BM 140HS) knife comfortably?
Using the standard sheath, I get hip pain after a day or two.
I've thought up a rig to lower the knife to my thigh, but would like suggestions from people who have actually EDC'ed a fixed blade.

I carry mine horizontally on my belt roghly centered in the small of my back. It is the only way I found that was comfortable at all.

Why are you getting hip pain?

I don't know, maybe you need to move it to a different part of your belt, or get a different sheath that rides higher or lower?

If the hip doesn't work, definitely try the thigh. It can be a lot easier, but you might not like the "wobble" as you walk. Secure it too tightly, of course, and that's also uncomfortable.

You might also move it to the upper body (shoulder area), secured either blade down or blade up, based on which grip you like to have your knife in.

What about when you're sitting down?
In the car, at the dinner table.
I can't imagine it being comfortable there.

I don't understand where the discomfort is coming from. I carry a sheath knife about that length, usually in my pocket but sometimes I put it on my belt when I run out of pocket space. I sit, drive ... everything except lie down on it; that would be uncomfortable.

It must be something about that sheath or the way you're positioning it. Have you tried appendix carry? Put it in front in the crease between your right leg and your belly, over your appendix. You can carry quite a large knife in comfort that way.

When I carried a small fixed blade I used to have this custom cordura sheath that went either vertical or horizontal , horizontally I could wear it out and with my shirt untucked nobody knew except me and it was quite comfortable.
Of course it was just a tad in the CC area , but.... what ya gonna do... ;)

I carry my EDC fixed blade horizontally in front. It attaches with a TekLok just to the right of my belt buckle. This is comfortable for me in all positions. The only potential downside is that the blade is easy to spot, but I'm not trying to conceal it.

In addition to being comfortable, this position makes for a very fast right-hand forward draw while allowing for a fairly easy left-hand reverse draw too. For utility purposes it is nice to have the blade where it can be casually drawn, used, and re-sheathed.

I EDC a FB very close in size to yours quite comfortably. This is done in a B-T-B (behind the belt) sheath in a cross draw position. Simply put, stick your knife in your belt like you used to do as a kid playing pirate. The belt keeps the knife snug to the body, the handle is above the belt for easy access and most of the blade is covered by the belt. Works best with blades 5" or less. Longer blades stick out too much and print, a big no no for a CCW.

Dwayne Pucket (Leatherman) made my rig. The secret is a 'saddle' type of loop that allows the whole thing to find it's own level. Very comfortable and very stealthy with an un tucked shirt. I can even get to it while wearing a seatbelt. HTH

When I carry a small fixed blade... well, I carry two, one's on my keychain and irrelevant, but the small of my back with the handle canted slightly down and to the right works just fine for me.

I had one of Eric's sheaths for my Nimravus for years. Used to carry it at work, and used it both IWB, plus outside the belt both vertical and with a cant using the supplied belt clip. A small TekLok also fits my sheath. Great sheath, and a 1000% improvement over BMs factory sheaths(great knives, but their sheaths pretty much suck in my experience). The full-size Nimravus is bigger than I want to carry horizontally in front, though I've carried a similar size knife horizontally SOB without too much discomfort.

If i remember correctly the BM 140 is the Nimravus? I had a IWB kydex sheath made for mine, wear it behind the right hip canted forward. Works ok.

I carry other fixed blades daily, usually a Cold Steel Desperado or Kobun, in the crossdraw position. I find that comfortable and my hips are fine :)

The most comfortable way for me to carry a fixed blade is to leave it at home and carry a folder ;)

Seriously though, I like horizontal carry at about 1:00 from my pants button, butt facing the rear, or neck carry.

When I'm in the field a sheath that drops the knife below my belt line is most comfortable and easiest to re-sheath when I have a coat or hunting gear on.

I carry a SOG tigershark strapped to my upper leg just about all day and almost every day:)
(don't ask why:)). It bothered me at first but you kinda get used to it. Now when I take it off I feel like I've removed an appendage or something.

BTW, I've tried carrying it between my teeth and I don't recommend it, Leaves an icky taste in the mouth and if your not carefull you will cut your tongue off!!!:eek:

It is very comfortable since it sits in the groove of the seat (where the top of the chair meets the bottom it makes an angle my body can't fit in, but most of the knife does).

If Eric can't help you then consider carrying it in a "dangle sheath" like a lot of the puukkos are carried. You can swing it up to unsheath and drop the sheath and when you are done swing it back up to re-sheath. I carry Fallkniven F1GM which comes with a full cover sheath but I like the dangle style so I modified one of my standard F1 sheaths to fit the "GM". The reqular F1 has a rubber like handle and is held in place by the finger guard(rubber) sticking to the leather. Since the F1GM has a green micarta handle with a metal finger guard I just had to add a leather insert to put some pressure on the "GM" handle area.

With all this said, Eric can probably do you a real nice horizontal sheath which should not give you any hip pain.
