Coming back from tactical

Depending on where I am, I generally have both a Queen Small Stockman and some sort of one handed folder on me, or instead of the 'tactical' folder, a fixed blade.

The slippie comes in real handy when I need a smaller blade, or less scare factor.

Enjoy both. If you feel you should sell or trade your tacticools to make money for slippies, then that is your choice. I like my one handed openers, but I have started carrying my slippies with my "modern" designs. I am favoring an electricians knife that I paid 7 bucks for last night, over my usual EDC Benchmade 710. Nothing wrong with the 710, its one of my favorites, but the electricians knife just has more character.

I like some of the tactical designs, and I often carry an AO at work, but when I hold a Benchmade it doesn't remind me of my grandfather's barn the way an old stockman does. An old Barlow will always remind me of my grandmother teaching me to tie fishing lures as a child, something that a Kershaw never will do. I like them all, but the slippies are a part of a heritage I guess, not to sound melodramatic or anything. Now, maybe my daughter will have fond memories of my Mcusta or Spydies... and that is alright too.

The funniest thing I've seen in a long time was a knife ad in a recent gun rag: Screamer headline: "Who Designed Your Tactical Knife?"

Who flippin' cares? Is this the best they can do for marketing hype?

Use whatever knife you want. But please don't tell me my knife is somehow "lesser", simply because it doesn't meet some criteria you decided was important.

I agree, and I'll add that my appreciation of one type of knife has no bearing upon my ability to appreciate another.

I think there is plenty of room in our knife world for all types (people and knives).

I came home from Blade with 5 slipjoints, a Kurdish card reproduction by Vince Evans and a small model 21 by Kit Carson.

nice. rub it in :grumpy:

:D

Don't throw out the tacs! Whether it's an old design or a new one, a good knife is a pleasure to use.

As I said earlier in this thread, I like and use both one hand opening knives and more traditional designs.

However, I've got to admit a carbon steel slippie ages better than a more modern one hand opener.

About "real" knives. I work as a wilderness guide, mostly long horseback trips through the mountains, I worked as a hunting guide for a few years and I'm a volunteer for the local mounted SAR unit. So my knives get as much work as an outdoors knife can get, SAKs and Opinels have held up just fine. And trust me, when you're giding a group of five with eight or ten horses/pack mules, you don't always have the time to look after your knife as much as you'd like, SAKs and Opinels have dealt with that just fine as well.

Hell, I took my SAK up a volcano in the Andes when I was working at an archeological dig, it worked so well that my One Hand Trekker stayed there as a gift to a co-worker.

I went through a SAK rejection phase when I first started learning about the new wonder steels and cool locks, but their sheer usefulness got SAKs a permanent place in my pocket.

Hah! I'm one of those guys who can't leave the house without an assortment of knives "just in case" or "I might need _____."

I have a one-handed folder in just about every pocket, but I also have a Schrade 8OT stockman in my watch pocket and an SAK Explorer Plus in my left front pocket.

You never know!

Yes, for the record this was not meant to turn into a Slippie vs. Tactical thread. I was just sharing how I feel. I seem to go back and forth between the two different kinds of knives. Right now I have a Delica SE on me along with a SAK.

Having limited income is the only thing that makes me want to sell stuff to get more. If I could I would just buy tons of slippies and tons of Spydies and others.

Thank you for all the replys. :)

Like others here, I enjoy having a selection of portable tools on my person. My one-handed, locking knife is a Benchmade 550 Griptilian in D2. That guy's ridden in a pocket for the last 3.5 years and will hopefully continue to do so for a long time to come. In the opposing front pocket is my Case 3.5" mini-Trapper with CV blades and amber jigged bone handles. That knife is far more beautiful than the Grippy. The Grippy, however, is the knife I'll reach for when I'm shearing off small branches while pruning. It's all a matter of carrying knives that one is comfortable with, capable with, and derives pleasure from :)
