Commander liner lock failure

I've had my commander for about 8 years now and the liner lock just gave out on me while cutting though some old dock lines this weekend. I only donated about a pint of blood before I could take a look at the problem. It seems when I apply pressure to the spine against the lock, the lock slips and skips its way out of battery. This of course sux as I just bought a newer cqc7 sans wave and will not justify the expenditure until I damn near need a new work horse. Anyone ever adjust the grind lines on the faces of the opposing metals, or tune up the locks or this just a done deal?

i would send it back to EKI they will fix it.

if ya start adjusting grind lines and such imho ya are gonna ruin the thing unless ya know WTF.

It would appear that the there is a very small bit of material missing on the edge of the liner, almost like a chip. I suppose I'll have to send it in although I have long lost the registration card and such.

Shame about your misfortune, hope it didn't cause any permanent damage.

I would check the Emerson web site for return instructions.
Here is the link to that page:

What's the vintage on the knife, what year on the blade. Hope it's not one of the dreaded fake 2000s.

I had the same problem with my commander and my CQC-8. I just got them back form service and they are better than new, there has been a slight change to the liners one side is TI and the other is stainless. I spoke with the lady who fixed my knives, she replaced the entire handle of my CQC-8 and perfectly fitted the lock on both knives. just send it back it only takes about a week and a half to get it back, leave a note in the box about what happened and what needs to be fixed.

I will probably contace EKI, about this, but I have a 1999 CQC7A in which the mating surface on the blade for the lock is very steep. When I put moderate pressure on the blade spine in locked position, the lock will 'pop' or 'skip' a little. It doesn't quite disengage, but I could imagine if used hard it very well could. BTW, this knife has never been used hard. It seems as if the blade tang's steepness is a major factor in lock wear and/or causing the slippage.

Now, since this model is DQ'd, I'm wondering if it could still be repaired or even replaced?

I've had the knife since it was new, but I noticed this problem years ago and have never done anything about it; it sits in a drawer.

EKI will fix it no questions asked. The knives are warranted for life, don't worry about receipts and such. In fact, I think they will be very concerned about the injury you sustained. Give them a call.

I've had the same problem where pressure on the spine causes the liner lock to start slipping toward the unlocked position. I have never had a complete failure and EKI Customer Service has fixed several of my knives.
Turn around time has usually been one week!

A lot of folks do don't kid yourself. Emerson is not the only company with a following my friend. And it isn't like Cold Steel is the new kid on the block. They got a good head start since they started business in the 80s.

Mine is still sitting in the blasting cap box with the others I won't carry anymore. I'll post when/if I send it in. I just get a little "edgy" with tools that have failed me in such a fashion :>

BTW it is in fact marked as a 2000. It is etched with the logo not painted on. Are there any tell tale signs? When it was new it seemed as sturdy and well built as the cqc7 I first bought that got me into these knives.

Ok I boxed it up and will send it out tomorrow. All markings, constructions and placements of fasteners are identical to my other Emerson's so I'm sure this isn't a knock off. My only concern was I truly cannot recall if I bought it direct or not. If it's a fake its a damn good one :> and it lasted about 8 years faithfully! I'll post on the outcome.

lol, lol, lol, i dont want anything from cold steal myself, lol.much less would i prefer ANYTHING made by coldsteal to anything made by EKI.

i dont care for CS folders for the simple reason i dont do FRN handle knives anymore, and most of CS folders are FRN, and those that arent are wayyy overpriced imho, not the worst knives i dont suppose but a long way from an EKI imho.

I like some of the cheap stuff from CS but pretty much anything over 50$ that is not made of CarbonV is overpriced copied crap. Their high end stuff is particularly outragous like the Natchez bowie for 600$. You could get a nice custom bowie for that or a Busse.

I think this is on topic --

I bought a used Commander 2000 with the OD G-10 scales about a month ago. It had some slippage of the liner on the blade which made me uneasy about the security of the lock. I sent it in to Emerson last week. They REPLACED the locking liner with a new one and sharpened the blade. Here's the thing -- they only charged me for the sharpening. This was on a knife I bought secondhand. Now it locks up like a brand new knife.

Now that's some kind of service.

I sent my 2000 commander in to Emerson and after Ernie Emerson called my house and left a message then tried my cell phone and left a message telling me it was a China fake I started to look around the web to see what the deal was. Well Ernie was right,go figure.I checked out my other 10 emersons and found out the other commander I bought on E-bay was also a fake, but the rest were real.I would guess that most have bought there fakes on E-bay.I can say that there was always a problem with the Commander I was carrying but I thought it was just the commander model because every other model I owned was great. Now I have to buy a real commander to give it a fair shot. IT WILL NOT BE A 2000 MODEL REAL OR NOT!!!!!!

EKI customer service is right up there with the best of them. I have never used it but have heard nothing but good about it.

As for CS I think they make very fine folders. Outstanding lock backs for plastic handled folders, and sharp as hell. Don't know about there higher end stuff as I have never owned it. I think the Carbon V they used to get was outstanding. I have a CS Master Hunter that I belive I bought the second year they came out. Still using it and without a doubt the finest fixed blade I have owned. I ain't saying that lightly either. I have had a bunch of very f.b's over the years and still have a bunch but no hunting knife I have used comes close to my Master Hunter. No hype here but something that I have used for a very very long time.

I also have a plain edged El Hombre folder that is about a good of s.d. knife as one could ask for. Razor sharp and the lock is unmovable when using the knife. Don't really carry that one to much just cause you don't see them around to much in a plain edge. Granted I like the newer steels probably more but have never had a problem with the CS AUS8a for getting it sharp and staying sharp. I like CS for those reasons. keepem sharp
