I love rhe Commander - great handle, opens easily, looks great, and a lot of steel.
But also a lot of $$$ for a production knife.

I agree. I have owned two Commanders. They are decent knives, but overpriced. They should probably be more in the $100 range. think you are probably paying for the name on this one.

Respectfully,
I totally disagree. I have used the ES1-M for over three years which is essentially same knife as Commander only approx. 20% bigger.

I have and do drills all the time and train using chronos. We have timed deployments, snapcuts, drawpoint drills etc. ad nausem.
I have YET to see a FASTER consistant deployment with manual knife, than the Commander/ES1-M period. I have seen consistant .80 sec draws all day long.
That's plenty fast. I trained at home after I saw it done by a Buddy in LE at EWC 2000.
I was able to meet it as well and occasionally hit .68, .74 sec but consistant .80 were the norm. That's fast in real time engagements.
When it comes to my life at stake I'll take every advantage I can.

I have other excellant Custom knives as well. Carson, Brend, Hammond, Crawford, Elishewitz etc. et al. NONE have ever come close to these times CONSISTASNTLY.
Consider and REALLY use the WAVE and see why it's worth every penny.

Granted, I would pick one I like for fit, function, tolerences, QC etc.
It is unquestionably an awesome tool and extremely effective for the BUCKS.

Hi,

Overpriced=maybe
I think it depends on who you get the thing from, if you order from Emerson it's gonna be like $209, many online dealers have it for $150-$170, Right now Cumberland has a mix and match thing going on, see what he can do for a price. I wouldn't pay that much for the Benchmades and Spydercos out there, but then the fit and finish is above those respective companies by a slight notch. I don't know, Mine was worth every penny and agree with Tamishigiri.

take it easy,

jon

I have to disagree with you guys. I think the Emerson Commander is worth every penny. Don't forget it has those most important words in front of it's name... Knife of the year! If you want to talk about an over priced knife, lets talk Spyderco. No people, I think Emerson has given us a knife that feels great in your hand, and the action on it is great. It opens just as fast as any auto, and is a very solid, hefty knife.

I'm with you up there, I think the knife is fairly priced. Full retail, no, but in the $150-$170. And actually $150, great for the buyer, scuks for the dealer, but some guys will give there stuff away to make a sell. We get no complaints for $169 around here. It's a lot of knife for the money.

I'll vote a bit overpriced.

I like the handle and finger guard on it, but the blade is kinda funny

Great knife for the price, and the fastest opening bar none... check out my review...

Until another knife with the Wave comes out on the market, this is the knife to beat IMHO. Put it like this - it retired my Microtech DA-SOCOM.

So, is it overprices? Maybe, but for now it's pretty unique and unless you can find something else that opens this fast, there's a lot of ground for any competitor to catch up on.

Overpriced? Yes. But that's at retail, and who's really charging full retail price anyway? Anywhere under $200 is a fair price for the Commander.

You could put nacho cheese sauce on it...

Over priced? I'd have to say that's a maybe on this one. $150 or so from an online dealer isn't so bad for a quality knife. However, I'm very hesitant to buy one from an online dealer because of inconsistent QC reports. I'll drop a lot of cash on a Spyderco cause I know that the quality will be great and in the unlikely chance that it isn't, their customer service department is really good. But I'm definately going to be more careful about paying $150 on a knife that could turn out to be a poorly made one due to slipping through cracks in QC. Knife purchasing shouldn't be gambling IMO.
