Well after about a 6 month wait, I finally got my Commander trainer from UPS today.

The waiting aside. I like it!

It has the same weight as the current production Commanders and opens just as fast.

I worked out on my Spar-Pro dummy tonight with the Trainer and did a ton of slashes and no damage to the skin on the trainer what so ever. The Spar-Pro hates the Commander now.

I also told the wife, after she came home from work, I've been working really hard on an ancient chinese breathing technique that makes you impervious to knife slashes and took the trainer and started to run the blade up and down my forearm. After about a second of wide-eyed fear on her face came the "ok ok ok I'm not impressed what's the trick" look. But I had her if only for a second I had her

I recommend if you carry the Commander get one of the trainers. The wait might be a little long but if you incorporate it into some of your training it will be worth it.

Best money I ever spent, I use mine all the time, and it really sold me on the Commander after using it at EWC2000. I can now practice without self inflicted accidents.

Hey Nyeti

I really wasn't ever worried about self-inflicted accidents. I just figured it might be a little easier convincing "live" training partners to participate with it instead of using my daily carry

I also figured that Spar-pro would last a little longer using the trainer too.

Ross,

You wrote that you did "a ton of slashes" on the dummy. Did you do any stabs to the dummy? Is the trainer's tip blunt and thick enough to perform thrusts on the dummy without puncturing it? I have heard some say that the Emerson trainer's tips are a bit on the thin side.

Axel

Hi again Axel

I didn't do any stabs on the dummy. I always considered folders slashers instead of stabbers.

From the looks of the trainers I think they are thick and blunt enough to not puncture the skin of the dummy. I don't have the trainer right here in front of me but the tips are the same thickness throughout the blade. I'm sure if you put enough thrust into it it could puncture but a medium speed and thrusted trainer probably wouldn't puncture it.

I'm tempted to try it out, probably tonight. I'll let you know if the Spar-pro grows an extra belly button or not.

Ross T.

OK......

Spar Pro didn't grow a new belly button.

I started with light stabs in his abdomen and continued upping the force until he started rocking a good bit. (I keep the base only half full so when struck it will move around so it will help with timing and how a person might move when struck)

I made sure I was coming in with the stab when he was rocking back my way and like I said no damage to the skin. I wouldn't try it with a live training partner but Spar-pro didn't complain

Hmmm... don' t know what the trainer cost but is the blade heat treated as well? To stand up to rigors of impact? Thanks.

I'm not sure that heat treating is desirable in a training knife. My understanding is that heat treating hardens a knife to make it hold an edge better. It can also make the blade more brittle.

A trainer has no edge to hold, but it must withstand impact well. So I think that non-heat treated steel would be more suitable for a trainer. Also the blade will be thicker for a trainer so it should hold up to the impact just fine.

I have several aluminum trainers which show no wear after much impact training. Aluminum is not known for its hardness properties, but works fine for training knives.

I also have a Crawford KFF steel, folding training knife. I'm not sure if the steel is heat treated. I could check on that.

I was half joking about the self inflicted wound stuff (although we have all probably drawn more of our own blood with our Emersons than anyone else's). I used my trainer against some stacked tires both thrusting and slashing. It held up beyond expectation to both. I agree that the Commander is totally geared (and excels) as a slasher and trapper more than a stabbing design. It does seem to perform pretty well at everything you could expect of a folder.

I was thinking the same Axel. Didn' t get to meet you this year at ECCK. I spoke with Kevin G. and he told me he will soon have some "juiced up" CRK& T Kaspers! Stay tuned.

L8r,

Nakano,

I also heard that Kevin is doing mods on the CRKT KFF. Reducing the LAWKS and trimming back the liner lock. I'm not sure what else he's doing. I e-mailed him about pricing, but he hasn't gotten back to me yet.

I didn't make it to the East Coast Custom Knife Show, but I did make it to a local one.
