Commander vs. Socom

Thanks, Scorpio! This has turned out to be a more difficult choice than I had anticipated. It sure is fun, though, and I'm learning an awful lot inthe process. I'm leaning toward the Synergy, but am not even close to making up my mind yet. Obviously, I MUST get one of each, but in what order??? The Commander continues to get high marks, and it seems Emerson's new machining process for the liner lock is working well.

Salamander,I did a whack test on my SOCOM MA the day I bought it.It held tight.

Both of the ones that I carry pass every time. Not about to wack the limited editions.

I'm sure there are some, (or many?) socoms that lock good. The four I have held all failed easily though.(spine whacking) Two would fail just by hitting it on my knee and even in the palm of my hand. Glad to know some pass. Later, Jeff.

I spine whacked the one I have on layaway up and down the length of the blade and it passed. I'm going for it! Cover me! I'm goin' in!!

I've got a Commander and a DA Socom, both are great knives, however the Commander makes it's way into my pocket everyday. With the Commander, I'll beat and abuse it and yeah, I have to tighten the pivot pin regularly but it's simple to do. I don't subject the SOCOM to the hard use I put my Commander through so I don't know how well it would hold up to the same tests. Both ride high in the pocket but the SOCOM rides higher. The Commander is way faster into action from a pocket draw position than the DA Socom. I'd pick the Commander as a better choice for daily carry but I think it boils down to the users feelings since both knives are excellent.

While I like the looks of the Commander, I feel the SOCOM is a better knife. I have owned several Commanders and several SOCOMS and of the two I now have only SOCOMs. The quality control is excellent (wish I could say the same for Emersons), And the ergonomics are just as good. Not to mention the SOCOM has superior blade coatings, not just beadblast or black-t that scratches easily. The tolerances on the SOCOM are second to none.

Should have added this in - I agree wholeheartedly about the comments of the SOCOM riding a lot higher than the Commander, it's practically night and day difference.

One thing that you don't appreciate until you've carried both is that the SOCOM has the clip on the widest end of the knife - with the narrow end being down in the pocket. The clip is also high enough for the entire knife to flip out if you catch it on anything. The Commander doesn't have nearly the problems my SOCOM did in this regard.

The wide end sticking out of the pocket also means that it's that much more of a bitch to get things into and out of that pocket. Don't put your money there...

The SOCOM is an excellently machined knife. When and if Emerson makes an aluminum handled Commander, then we'll really have a run for the money as far as quality goes. But for now - the SOCOM may be better machined, but I carry the Commander.

I agree that carrying a Socom in your front pocket is not very comfy. But, when carried in the waistband (as I prefer), that's where the (older style) clip really shines IMO. It rides high, but secure, and is easy to grab. I love my clip point Socoms. The ergonomics are perfect for me. If the Socom's would have some 'busk' at the end of the handle, they would be absolutely perfect for me.

Salamander,
You sold two SOCOM's because the locks didn't hold?
Why wouldn't you just send them back to MT who would repair or replace them no questions asked?
I own five socoms and beat the $hit out of them on a wooden workbench trying to make the lock fail and never once on any of them failed! Those knives are damned tough.
I do agree with Spark about the early models riding too high though, but the new ones suit my taste perfectly. Just high enough for a quick and easy draw now.
Take Care,
Al
