Commander

So, anybody here have the whole commander line up and willing to put of a pic of micro through uber all side by side?

I no longer had my Micro-Comm when I took this picture, but here's Mini-UBR

Dr_fosg8, you said you used to have a 7.
My favorite Emerson is my Super Commander but I love my 7aw.
Rolf is right -- you NEED a 7 for back-up! :D

You may be right there! I want to try the a-100 before I get another 7 though. Soooo many designs to try.

Silvanus, thanks for that pic of the group. Really puts the sizes in perspective. The serrations on the mini look very aggressive.

A.P.F. do you have the regular a-100 or the mini?

Emerson's serrations are some of the best in the industry. I like them a lot.

I think I must be one of the few people, maybe the only one, who doesn't much care for the Commander.

It's just my personal preference. I don't much like recurve blades.

But I do recognize it's one of the iconic Emersons, and I think most would feel that an Emerson collection is incomplete without a Commander. Some day, perhaps I'll get one, just for that reason. But there are a lot of other Emersons I'll get first. My first and only so far is a CQC-8, and next will probably be a Journeyman.

For me, the CQC-7 falls into the same category as the Commander, Emerson knives that are iconic and belong in anyone's collection, but ones I personally won't get until later. I like the 7's tanto blade, but not the handle. I'll probably get one of the other Emerson tanto models before I get a CQC-7.

But these are just my own opinions, nothing more. And what's great about Emersons is we can all have our personal favorites, all still have great knives, and all still have great stories and passion to share with others.

I would add a few comments here - starting with you have to get a knife that 'speaks' to you in some key way. That classic combination of function and form should work for you before you part with your cash. That said, I LOVE the way the Commander series looks and I enjoy how versatile the blade shape is.

What I also wanted to add is that 'feel' is different to 'looks'.

I had concerns about the 7's handle shape but I actually like how I can choke my grip right up behind the blade heel. It doesn't look great but it feels fine. The hand is pretty adept at adapting to gripping a wide variety of shapes. (Note: please view my comments in the context of a very new 7 owner!)

Either way, as you say, having a wide array of Emersons to chose from means you can find one (or two) which really work for you...

Cheers,

Ben

Ben- Thank for the post.
I bet the A100 feels great in the hand. When EKI puts a tanto blade in that handle, I'll get one.

Rolf,

You are a terrific enabler in both the best and worst of ways ;) - seriously, thanks for all your input. It does help inform our decisions and it makes us feel even better about making these purchases!!!

I should add, that my first two Emersons (Comm and Mini-Comm) are real users and I fully intend to use the heck out of each of the new 3 too.

Thanks!

Ben

You are welcome, Ben.
Knives are meant to be used.
btw, Gang,... I have back-up 7's. That's 7's. :D

Pro-Tech makes a huge variety of auto CQC-7's licensed by Emerson. Also, to answer Akapennypincher's question, I believe that auto Commander is a Kershaw/Emerson collaboration from a few years back that has since been discontinued

The jungle commander was my first Emerson. I was late to the EKI world. Extremely awesome knife. Congrats on your new blade.
