I would appreciate any comments on this model that I am about to send to Uncle Bill.
It has about a 10" blade, 3/8" thick sharpened on both edges. It is a full 3/8" thick Chiruwa style tang. This helps the blade balance just right. This is a much enlarged version of a knife a friend has and we have been discussing making a larger version. Please let me know what you think. I would like to have a couple made.
Thanks, Greg Z.

Looks good! Can you elaborate a little as to how the handle is going to be, which kind of material and fittings? Chiruwa is understood but what about guard and buttcap (if any)? or is it going to be like the HI bird and trout, no fittings and just the protruding tang drilled?

It looks great! It reminds me of a bolo. Is that a skull crusher on the end?

By the way which one's Pink?

Looks like this thread got duped somehow, so I'll repost my reply on the other one:

I LIKE!
With that recurve belly looks like it'd cut like a buzzsaw. Betcha you'll have yourself a time getting the kamis to make it "a mere 3/8"."

I accidently posted the first one with improper formatting so the image didn't come up. I had intended for the slab grips to be riveted on with no buttcap or bolster in the front. The guard is part of the blade itself. I don't know if this will be a big problem or not.

I worked on the model some more this afternoon, coloring the grips and putting on some dots to represent the rivets. What else should I do?

Thanks, Greg Z.

Greg it would be better for the kamis to understand if you would use some aluminium paint to paint the blade and the guard since they're integral.
Actually it may be best if you paint the whole knife aluminium and then use a brown or color of your choice, that looks like the slab material, and then color the rivets
in.
When I made the YCS model I painted the whole knife that way and then painted the handle
brown.
I used paper cut out to the shape of the inlays and glued them on and then used a sharpie and a magic marker to color the centers of the inlay representing the horn centers.
I then used gold and copper model car paint to paint the brass and copper inlays in the Sword of Shiva.
It would have fooled anyone at a distance in the daytime and up close at night into thinking it was real.

The more detail the better!!!!

When you get it painted you might want to use a sharpie or the thin side of a dark magic marker to draw a thin line to where you want it hardened too.
Ask Uncle Bill about that though since he could do it when it gets to Reno.
I didn't have to do that since the kamis know where a khukuri should be hardened too.
But they might also know what to do with a double edge as well.
I dunno.

How about it Bro?

Greg,
are you going to post a picture of the wooden model final version? It sounds like is going to be quite a nice looking knife and you may get more people interested in it.

Ok, I did a little more work. Painted it w/aluminum engine paint and dyed the handle slabs. I also put some nail heads where the rivets would go although they don't show up to well in the picture.

The black line down the center is where the blade tapers from and the other represents the hardening line.

Hopefully the new picture will show up here:

I used the same name for the image and that's why the old one is gone now.

Thanks, Greg Z.

That's just beautiful, G.

I wonder if the kamis are going to have any trouble hardening a knife on both sides? I understood they poured water to cool the softer areas, if both edges have to be hardened seems like it would be tough to control. Somebody with more knowledge of smithing might know this.

A 10 inch blade sounds a little on the small side- how about sixteen to eighteen inches by 2 and a half to three inches wide at three-eighths inches thick with the usual distal taper? The "skull-crusher" pommel looks a little sharp, might be just the photo though.

Great model work!

I'll post some more details on the blade size later tonight. I suppose the blade could be about 12" but much longer than that and it would be too large to suit my purpose which is a close in weapon.

I appreciate the compliments and hadn't given much thought to a name so I'll throw it open to the forum and Uncle Bill.

Thanks, Greg Z.
