Does such a company exist?

I'm looking for a place that can handle a large batch of knives (50+).

I'd do it myself...but I'd be at the oven for weeks....:foot:

I'd rather send it all off to someone set up to handle higher quantities.

Any suggestions?

FWIW, the steel is 1/4" thick 5160, 3"x16" (max)

Thanks!

Dan

I would be very carefull specifying exactly how they would be heat treated .You don't want them to be just dumped together.Hardness checks too.

Hey Dan, I am new to knife making and have been in stealth mode on the forums (learning...reading...learning) since the early part of this year. I had purchased a Coote in June and began to grind about 20 some blades out of 1095. By the end of the summer I was ready for HT, a friend of mine, who is a full time maker from Ohio suggested Peters HT. I called Brad from Peters and had them do the work. Apparently they do about 500,000 knives a year, including HT for many custom makers, as well as a few production companies whose names you would immediately recognize. They are very affordable, I believe they had quoted me a price of $40 per 20lbs. of 1095. Cryo is more and shipping would also need to be accounted for. Call Brad 814-333-1782. I am not affiliated with them, just passing on my experiences...good luck. PS - I will be posting a pic of my first knife by the end of this week...take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks, John.

Also, I just read comment from Mete above. Peters does a hardness test of every piece. The will guarantee whatever Rc you specify, they will also help out with and make suggestions, if need be. I had my 1095 hardened then tempered to 58-59 Rc. Every blade had a little "ping" mark in the tang where it was tested. Again, good luck.

Dan,

I use Peters' Heat Treating exclusively and have had nothing but good results from everything I've sent (O-1, 1095, ATS-34, AUS-8, CPM-154). Talk to Brad Stallsmith. Great guy and will get you what you need. Again, highly recommend them.

Ok, guys - will give Brad a call tomorrow. Thanks!

Dan

I've been leaning toward Heinzelman Heat Treating (www.heinzelmanht.com). They had a pretty reasonable minimum order and a section of the website is geared toward knifemakers. I havent sent them anything yet, so I dont have direct experience.

I guess I misunderstood, I thought the steel was 3V until I reread the type Dan was talking about. Paul has done 3V for me since he moved to Idaho.

Hey, Dan, I talked to Brad today and told him you may be calling him. He seemed very excited to get a large order in. Good luck!

Thanks, Erik. I was busy at the grinder today...but will definitely hook up with him. Maybe next time you talk to him, give him my cell# 479-366-7794

Thanks!

Dan

I've had one knife heat treated through Peter's Heat Treat as well, they were very good, and very flexible. It wasn't a carbon blade, but the equipment they told me they were using for the heat treatment of carbon steels is top notch. Please report back your experience with them.

Dan: I don't think it's a very good idea to post your cell phone number on a public forum.

Does Peters HT have a minimum order? What are there prices like for just a couple of knives? Say I wanted to have 5, 8" overall knives HTed, would they do that?
Just thought I'd try and get my questions answered by you guys before I bothered calling them, especially since I don't have anything ready to go out right now.

They did just one knife for me, but you'll have to contact them and see what they say.
