Also consider the cost of what heat-treating on your own would include. Buying an oven, quenchant, RC tester... and having to spend the time to refine and perfect reliable and consisten heat-treating.
Like Frank, I used knifemaker.ca and they do a fine job, and RC test everything and consistently get my blades within 0.5-1RC point of my request. You pay more or less depending on the length, but there is no discount for exceeding a weight or # of blades. I would never be able to make knives without this service, I'm more than happy to pay for quality results and to deal with some great people.
