Both are really nice. The FT-817 I have talked to people from the White mountains in NH to people in NY, RI, and friends in CT when I was backcountry camping. A little work is involved but I have had scheduled contacts with my friends from CT several times. I have no doubt that if I had an emergency I could use that to contact people with no other problems. I don't carry that all the time but I did want to experiment with it to see how easy contacts would be.
Saying that I usually only carry my HT 2m/440 and can usually reach a repeater if I needed to. Even in most areas of the White mountains and several times in the Adirondacks.
The FT-817 is a real blast to operate.
I had the FT-857 in my truck for a couple of years with the remote kit. The only thing you saw was the face plate and the microphone. Finally removed it because I was using it more as a scanner than a HF/VHF/UHF rig. Another really great radio though. I'll probably set it up in the house.
