Anyone take note of companies that provide their knives with a razor sharp edge before shipping them out to the stores? I ask cuz most knives I've ever bought arent very sharp and need some work before first use. The only company I can say that sharpens their knives to the point of being almost on par with a piece of obsidian is the Norwegian company, Helle. I got a Kvernstein model from them and its so sharp its foolish to even test the blade on your fingernail:eek:. Any American knife companies you feel good about out of the box with no touch up? My latest buy, Benchmade-Hechler&Koch switchblade is fairly sharp, but not like the Helle bushcraft knife.

All the rough riders I have bought have come ungodly sharp. Funny, that. $7 knife and sharp as a razor.

Oh, and my new Buck 303 was super sharp. Lots of others I can think of that aren't traditional...

Kershaw
SOG
Gerber

I buy a lot of used knives, though.

Assuming we are talking traditional folders and fixed blades, I have always been satisfied with Case, Buck, and Bark River.

I'm not talking hair splittin here but most of those have good usable edges out of the box.

Kershaw, rough rider, spyderco, esee. Never had a dull one from these companies.

Bucks consistently and Moras

My Rajah II too.

That's it so far of what I've bought that came sharp enough I simply washed them and stropped them and put them in the pile.

all of mine including the one i bought monday came sharp enough to shave hair off my arm, from the higher dollar stainless to the cv sodbuster they came sharp. Buck is another one thats very good, cept for my 110 but that was remedied. Rough riders have all come pretty sharp too.

Assuming we are talking traditional folders and fixed blades,..

That's what we should be discussing in this thread...thank you for putting in the gentle reminder.

Rough Rider certainly hands out a sharpie and at low cost.

Bark River fixed blades come so sharp you can take the skin as well as the hair off your arm:eek:

CASE , Buck reasonable, Böker too.

Queen, GEC, Northfield er......:D Sometimes:D fine knives though.

I think discussing sharp, is like discussing what is a nice looking dog......everyone has different ideas.....

If I get a dull Buck, I am POed. Which doesn't happen often.

This is my definition of sharp. It is sharp if, "I am e-specially very careful when closing the blades." I just hate having my fingerprint sliced off.

Canal Street's knives are very consistently sharp out of the box.

Case does a fairly good job with factory sharpness. Buck does too. The edges on the two Bucks that arrived today are crazy, screaming sharp! GEC does an okay job, but I've gotten a couple that were dull as bricks, and needed to be completely reprofiled. Queen is awful, Schatt & Morgan is hit & miss, as is Moore Maker. All of my Bark Rivers have had superb factory edges.

They're not American, but I've never seen a Victorinox that wasn't good & sharp, right out of the box.

There is a line of knives called "Rock Creek" made by Hanwei in China. All of these that i have are superbly made and super sharp. Only a few of the folders are a Traditional pattern, but their FB's are Traditional style.

The only company that makes traditional knives and also ships them out sharp is Bark River in my experience. I haven't encountered a slipjoint maker that does a consistent job sharpening its wares.

My experiance with Spyderco and Bark River - sharp out of the box. I have to agree about Helle. I recieved a Helle Egen a few months back and wow - scary sharp.

another mention for Rough Rider.
i've received sharp knives from other companies but Rough Riders are the only ones that have had consistently great edges, in my experience.

I've heard Kershaw ships'em sharp. Never heard of Rough Rider. Where are they from?

Rough Riders are made in China and you might be amazed at the quality of knife that you get for 7 or 8 bucks.

I believe someone here in the U.S. has them made in China but I don't know for sure who that is.
