Rough Riders are made in China and you might be amazed at the quality of knife that you get for 7 or 8 bucks.

I believe someone here in the U.S. has them made in China but I don't know for sure who that is.

The Rough rider brand is owned by Kevin Pipes of Smoky mountain knifeworks.

All the Bucks and Bokers I've gotten have come good and sharp.

As far as bargain knives go, I don't own any Rough Riders, but I have few Kissing Cranes, and they all came sharp out of the box.

The last Case I got was dull, but others were sharp as far as I recall.

Case, Kissing Crane (strong spring and fat finger in the way = nice deep cut) :D Rough Rider all come very sharp. My 1 and only Queen has never been used cause she's dull and I'm not to great at reprofiling. :(

I'm sorry but I have purchased a boat load of Rough Riders, Bokers, Case and all sorts of less traditional knives. And very rarely do they come Razor Sharp. For me Razor sharp is when I can cut A wavy line through a thin sheet of paper like legal paper with ease without the slightest snag.
However, lots of knives after a little bit of work on my strop. First Barkriver Black Compound then Green. Can get knives to were I want them.

I only am saying this because if you don't have the ability to get a knife this sharp. Then After using for a little while you won't have a very sharp knife anyway so who cares that you bought one to begin with. I am not talking though about reprofiling the edge geometry or something that you need to take off allot of steel. Because that takes allot of time effort and skill and it's unacceptable from any brand at any price

I've seen dull knives out of the box from just about every manufacturer listed here, even BRKT - more than once.

Sharpening is a skill we all need to have, just sharpen the knife if it's not scary sharp enough for you.

My Case Trapper was fresh out of the box last Deer season and it did not have any trouble skinning and quartering the deer I got. That is sharp enough for me.
I bought some Rough Riders to sell at the Flea Market, they are nice looking knives if anyone needs a cheap knife to carry or practice sharpening.

I never understood the fascination with "razor sharp." I want a razor to be razor sharp, but a knife to be, well, knife sharp. An edge that's too thin will just chip or roll. The proverbial "piece of obsidian" mentioned by the OP might shave thin slices off a piece of paper, but try whittling a few good hotdog-cookin' stick for your kids, and you'll be wishing you had a knife instead. YMMV.

I am going to put in a plug for Iisakki Jarvenpaa of Finland, maker of traditional puukkos and leukus. I got an Iisakki leuku for Christmas and even though it is a big tough service camp knife, it came with a razor sharp scandi grind edge...I am very pleased. Iisakki is a new favorite.

Victorinox SAKs are always very sharp.

I have never had a new knife that was sharp enough to suit my taste. The first thing I do to any new knife is put my personal touch on the blade.

I kind of get annoyed with out-of-the-box sharp - means I get to wait before putting the edge on it - and I really like waiting where new knives are concerned :D

Off the top of my head,Spyderco,Kershaw & BUCK have consistently came to me with a good, working edge.
I'm not going to get into the ones that don't.It's been done to death IMO.

[edit] disregard the above post.I didn't realize I was in the Traditional sub,until after I posted.My apologies.[/edit]
