Hello,

I'm looking for a bushcraft knife under $100 and I fexed on 2 knives:

- Gerber Gator Premium Drop Point Fixed Blade Knife (4" Polish) 30-001083 - CPM-S30V blade steel
- Morakniv Garberg Fixed Blade Knife Black w/ Leather Sheath (4.25" Satin) - 14C28N blade steel

I read a lot about these 2 types of steel blades but I’ve undecided yet. I’ll not use the knife very intensive but I want to be able to rely on it when I use it.
I like more the design of Gerber Gator Premium but I think Mora Garberg is more versatile.

So, what you recommend for me?
Thanks in advance!

Mora Garberg, no question. Gerbers have been questionable on quality for years and the Mora is built more for bushcraft to begin with.

thank you, M MarkN86 ! I read that the CPM-S30V steel is over 14C28N in terms of strength and fine edge retention but all reviews of Mora Garberg are positive and a lot of reviewers have appreciate it very much.

I have a lot of fixed blades I've carried in the woods in multiple states and I'll say that in this comparo, I'd pick the Mora all day long.

I have the Mora Garberg and I really like it. That being said, I have old Gerber knives I bought in the 80s that I really like so this particular Gerber intrigues me. Unfortunately my recent Gerber experience is mixed so I'd have to see the Gerber in person before I'd consider buying it.

The Garberg is definitely a known quantity in terms of quality, although their carbon blades are probably more popular.
14C28N on a scandi grind (although IIRC the Garberg comes with a microbevel) is definitely going to be easier to sharpen than S30V, especially in the field.
Carbon would be even easier to sharpen (with tradeoffs in corrosion resistance and absolute edge retention), and can spark a flint.

If carbon steel is okay with you, the Condor Terrasaur is very competitive with the Garberg but about half the price.

Hahahah!!!
S Stelth , what bad experience had you with your recent Gerber?

Thank you for your feedback! I'll take a look on Condor Terrasaur!

Fortunately the experience was limited to seeing them in stores. I just wasn't impressed with the fit and finish. I have a Blackie Collins designed Gerber River knife that I've had at least 30 years and the offerings I've handled in stores couldn't compare with it.

Thanks, S Stelth !

  1. Based on my experience with Gerbers, I will never buy another one of their products. The Garberg is the clear choice. If you want to save some money, though, consider the Kansbol. It performs fully as well as the Garberg, but costs about half. It lacks the full tang of the Garberg, but you will never break it.

Hi, Henry Beige Henry Beige ! Thanks four your advice. I prefer the full tang so, I'll go on Garberg!

Gerber's product line was destroyed when Fiskars acquired them. They used to be a premium maker, but they haven't made much that's worth having since the mid 1990s. Buy the Mora, you will be much happier.
