Comparing stainless outdoor fixed blades

My prefefences for outdoor/hiking knives are scandi knives, mostly because I am so used to them. My favourites these days are the Roselli Bear Claw (for pocket carry fb) and the larger and sturdier Enzo Elver. The last one has a 4 mm spine and is a very well made bushcraft knife. I can baton firewood with confidence.

Still, for lighter outdoor use (like food prep) I would like to get a thinner, more slicing oriented fb. It would not hurt for this knife to have also woodworking ability but that is not it's strong point. I have taken a look at two makers, Grohman knives and Condor knife and tool. Of these I am mostly considering Condor Hivernant or, from Grohman models either Boat knife or The Canadian belt knife. These are all stainless, which of course limits my choises.

Size of these one's are very close. Of course the Condor is much cheaper. Is the quality also almost half of Grohman? If so that would push my choise towards Canadian knife maker.

I have no experience of either maker and please, give some quick answers because the summer is here and I would like to get the knife soon. :)

Desperately seeking advice. Anyone? I've read good reviews of the Grohman knives on Bladeforums, also some of the Condors.

I'm only familiar with the Russell Grohman knives in that I have two and they are well made, sturdy knives. And have the reputation of being in business a long time with many users of their knives. Quality goods.
Don't think you'd go wrong with one.

I read that the boat knife model has been used, with a different sheath, by Canadian armed forces since 1964. I would consider also that a commendation.

I like the famous eliptical blade on the original Canadian belt knife.
Just checking the Grohman website, it looks like you can get it in stainless or carbon.

Great choice!! The Russell Grohmans are superb!!!

R Murphy (USA) makes a version of the belt knife as well (only in carbon) It's a great knife and compares very favorably with the originals.

The fact that this model is issued as a military knife in interesting. It would be nice if anyone could link some information about this.

Yes, the #3 Grohmann is the Canadian Army knife, the Boat knife with a different sheath. The Boat Knife model is R3S. CAF is R3SA. For lighter use like camp food prep I'd lean toward the #2 Trout and Bird. I just picked on up at a gun show last weekend so have really used it. The Grohmann Russells have excellent ergonomics and balance in the hand. Like being an extension of the hand, almost as if the knife were just another finger.

The Grohmann knives are great, amazing feel in the hand. Regarding the Canadian military use. Unfortunately the Minister of defence who is the member of parliament for the riding that Grohmann is in decided to give the contract for military knives to an offshore company. It was never tendered and the minister even supplied the new company with the design to copy. No sorry,no notice just see ya later. ;-(((((

Best regards

Here is the large Grohmann hunter from their custom shop. a great camp knife that will handle pretty much anything you throw at it.
A friend asked me to make him a heavier sheath, this is the result.

Best regards

Oh my goodness. The first time I took this in my hand I understood why people like these knives so much. The ergonomics feel excellent. The knife feels not too large, not too small. Light and nimble. I must put this to use as soon as possible. Just what I wanted.

The spine is considerable, but not too thick. Actually this feels a bit like a high class japanese kitchen knife I once handled, it too had a sturdy blade.

The belt loop on the sheath could be larger, so I might do a new loop. Quess there is allways something to improve.

That looks great, both the knife and sheath are beautifull!
