Comparing the Dog Father and Battle Mistress

Hey all,

Well I lucked out and scored what I wanted from my first ganza - a Desert Dog Father :D

With that said, I have had my eye on a combat grade Fusion Battle Mistress for a while now and just wondering how the two stack up against each other and/or if they are even comparable?

I really know nothing about the Dog Fathers (haven't found too much on here) and assume the biggest difference is the handle material and steel...?

Dont mean to start a Busse vs. Scrap Yard war - just genuinely curious if I can expect the Desert Dog Father to sate my FBM hunger

The handle on the dogfather is more comfortable for extended chopping but the steel isn't quite as nice. I say buy both and beat them until your arms fall off

And no, the df won't sate your craving for a battle mistress. In fact, NOTHING will ever satisfy the hunger for INFI :D

TW,

I'm in the "same shoes", man.
...you will end up owning both, I'm sure.:D
I'm really curious, too, as I scored a DF, but I just MUST HAVE a BM.
My impressions, that the DF is more of a "beater", and the BM is just more versatile blade.

..."DOG FATHER"..."Battle Mistress"...the COOLEST names for the coolest blades in the knife industry, IMHO.:cool:

there's also the issue of hidden tang vs exposed. the dogfather is lighter but has more forward weight

Hey guys - thank you very much for the replies.

I guess I knew the answer to my original question already and that I do still need a good Mistress :D

Excited to try the handle on the DF - will be a nice change from micarta.

Well off to hunt for my user CGFBM :p

Easy answer, you need both.

If I could only have one of the two it would be the FBM but why stop with one? :D

They are different enough to warrant having both.

If you want another justification...if you have TWO HANDS, there's no reason not to have both. :D

I really think that the Dog Father will be a bit more useful design. It is a really good general purpose largish chopper. It has what appears to be a very comfy handle, and there will be a good weight savings. It seems to be less flash, and more utility.

I have a FBMLE with a convex edge and smoothed scales, and I still want a Dogfather. In fact, I would like one of just about every knife that Scrap Yard sells. They just all seem like great useful designs at a great price point when you consider the warranty, and resale value.

So far all I have is infi, and I have never pulled the trigger on a Scrap Yard or swamp rat.

I really don't think you will be disappointed at all. That is the best color combo in my opinion and I would have grabbed one if I had any cheese in my pockets at all.

I really don't think you will notice performance difference in the steels. Infi will have an edge in edge retention, but you might not notice the difference.

The resin-c handles of the DF do offer better shock absorbsion and IMO slip resistance. But the BM blade with the grooves is really cool.

What if you just use one, and see if necessity forces you to buy the other. It doesn't sound like you really want a comparison. It sounds like you're asking people to justify your urge to have more stuff... which is ok. You came to the right place. :D

I'm thinking though you'll have no complaints with the performance of the Dog Father. I really doubt you'll use it and say "ya know, I really need a couple hundred dollars more performance out of my knife."

Come on. In terms of sheer cool factor the battle mistress >>>> DF.

I don't have a DF but I do have a SOD, and it is easily the most comfortable and ergonomic blade I own, and strikes a perfect balance for a chopper. Plus the handle is tough as hell and comfortable. Check out the knifetests.com test of the scrapper 6 to see what these knives can take.

My Busse collection is comprised of only a CGFBM and an AK-47 (for now, have a tankbuster ordered). The CGFBM is gray with snakeskin and is easily the coolest blade I own, although I have a titanium and damascus Protech Godson on the way. :]

You will end up getting them both. The battle mistress is a "classic" must own Busse IMO. Although it will cost you.

i just won a desert df also, awsome knife.but i think the battle mistress is the coolest knife on the planet.i own a fbm .25 and a fbm le .32.i think some of the other hogs said it well,,,you need both!!!

to be honest I don't have a DF but the BM's are bad. I know if you get one, you got to have other BMs... it's an addiction!

You know, I'm a pretty considerate guy and will help you out - why don't you just send your "bad" muddy FBM to me in NYC, hell, I'll even pay postage :D

The DF's are nice blades. I am very partial to my DFLE and think its one of the best "all around" choppers I have. Its light enough to not drag the belt down and more nimble in the hand than the BM's until you get into the E-handled ones. I own several BM's. I dont think the DF chops with the CGFBM and certainly not with the FFBM or NMFBM but it def holds its own. You'll notice better edge retention with the INFI blade and I feel the heavier BM's send more wood flying. Where I think the DF or to me the DFLE makes up for that is its shock absorbtion is better and I feel less handle impact over a period of long use.

Others opinions may very, these are just from my experiences. Oh and as Liu Kang said, once you get the CGFBM you start to wonder how the others will perform. The FFBM is a different beast as far as feel goes, much heavier and hits like the hammer of the Gods! The NMFBM feels almost lighter than the FFBM IMO because of the weight distribution...but I read its the same weight? I use that alot now as I really like the meltdown handle and overall package. Once you get those....you'll want a BM-E and a SHBM!

What are you going to do with a BM in NYC? Are there even anything to chop there? lol
