Comparing two specific grinders?

Anyone have experience with BOTH the KMG 2x72 grinder and the Oregon Blade Maker 2x72 on eBay?

The KMG setup with a 1.5hp motor and variable speed pulley system, flat platen, work rest, etc is around 1300$

A comparably setup Oregon Blade Maker is 1400$ for the chassis, motor with VFD, drive wheel, base plate and work rest.

I believe the KMG would be the better machine but wondered if anyone else had experience using both of these?

Thanks!

If it were me I would look for a grinder with a motor that mounts onto the grinder itself and uses a VFD for speed control. Neither the KMG or OBM meet that criteria - so I would suggest looking at maybe a Pheer or DIY Little Buddy. Not that either of those two wouldn't work for you...just if it were me...

I love my Pheer 427! Same price range, direct drive w/VFD, and Jose gives great service!

I totally second this thought, and Walts as well on the Pheer, I also will recommend taking a look at the AMK grinder:

Our grinder comes with a flat platen and a 10" serrated wheel. These are features you will pay extra for with other grinders. Yep that's right, ours comes with both, and you can easily switch between the two by rotating the swing attachment arm

The above is from the webpage - understand that price is for a single speed only. You need to add in cost of 3 ph motor and VFD to compare to the grinders you mentioned with VFD.

Wow, I'm pretty darned impressed with the AMK77. I'd never heard of it. Being able to quickly switch/rotate between wheel and platen is awesome. Looks well built. I think I'd initially buy in the one-speed, add the small wheel attachment and add a VFD later. Thanks for the heads up!!!

Just remember when you add the VFD you'll also have to buy a new 3 ph motor.

I would recommend calling and talking to Allen Poe, he is the designer and mfg. of the AMK products, he has a really good deal with the supplier he buys motors from-and will recommend the best cost options for you to reach your eventual goal. I like my grinder very much, it is nice that it comes with a flat platen and a large contact wheel--you don't need a separate tool arm to use them, just flip the included arm around on it's pivoting lock. For small wheels, he has an attachment that requires you remove to hex headed cap screws fro the flat platen assembly and then you mount the small wheel adapter into that 'slot'--works well, and is set up where you can run the belt around the outside of the flat platen wheels or inside of them for a more acute angle of the belt around the small wheels. It also flips horizontal---you can tweak it however you want-for example I went with an upgrade to put a 3 phase 3HP Leeson motor on mine and a 12" contact wheel--turned out to be just what I was looking for. I have told Allen that I really liked the surface grinding attachment that Travis has on the TW-90, and Allen told me he was working on a surface grinding attachment that will work on his grinder.

PS-- you can find the AMK grinder on the Bay also.
