Comparison of two working horses: DoukDouk and K55K Mercator

interesting. ive been interested in both of these knives for a while. thanks for the 'side by side' comparison.

Fellows - your replies are great :)

I think I should explain a little how the K55K Mercator got its name. Well... Mercator = Kaufmann = Businessman in english language. Kaufmann was the family that got the contract by German Defense Department in the German Empire. The K55K means nothing more, than Kaufmann, 55th street, Köln (Cologne). The streets in that time where a little strange. But they had no names, just numbers. Just think about the women´s parfum 4711 - mostly for old(er) women. This was made in a house in the 4711th street in Cologne. Back to the K55K - the company Kaufmann never made any knives themselves. They had sub-companies in Solingen like Otter and many others that made these knives for the department. So (imo), K55K Mercator is not the name of the knife itself, but the name of the pattern.

I thought, I should add this, because I wrote something about the DoukDouk in its history.

Maybe now I brought some clearence ;)

Thanks uncle Andi! great write up and now on my way to buy another K55.I probably had 10 of them thru life and always gift them to friends.

Excellent review ! I really enjoyed it. I've owned 3 Douk-Douks including the squirrel, I've also owned a K55K for for some time. I believe you really need to aim to acquire both of these great, working knives. I'm kinda partial to the somewhat more contemporary (to me eye anyways) K55K seeing as I find it user friendly and maybe a bit more finely finished. Still that's purely personal preference and I believe both are fantastic sporting their own character and old school charm.

I have a Small DoukDouk in my pocked and must say it cuts and carries very well! And bought for only €10 in the heart of Paris. :-)

Thanks Andi! Great info here.
I prefer the k55k also.
And thanks for the German penny. ;)

I have never owned a K55 (looks like I may have to remedy that ASAP) but I love my Douk Douk. I work part time at a local hospital's ER and any knife I can carry in scrub pockets is great. The Douk Douk may be the easiest to carry knife I own. Huge blade in such a flat handle, and will take a scary sharp edge with very little work. All in all the Douk Douk is a fantastic knife for it's price.

Thanks for the nice replies. My intention in making this comparison was to show off traditional european working knives with a slim handle a very reasonable price, most of people (maybe everyone) could afford. Both make great working knives for general EDC or Heavy-Duty-Tasks.

You guys should try each pattern as well as the other. Imo definitelly worth the price. :)
