I just lost my 25 year old Silva compass while snowshoe hare hunting in Maine. After some research I'm thinking of buying a Suunto MC with the global needle.I probably don't need the global needle but they say it can be read even when held on a slight angle.I like the feature of the mirror [signaling] and the magnifier in the base.Does anyone have any experience or opinions of this compass?

I have the Suunto MC2G-MM (which is the metric version - for the rulers). It is a great compass.

I like the accuracy of the markings, and the needle dampens FAST!

The global needle is quite interesting. Not only will it work at a slight angle, it will work at quite an extreme angle. I wouldn't push it in real use.....but you know I had to play with it to see what it could do :D

The needle almost reminds me of a gyroscope. The magnet and the needle are seperate, and they kind of rotate around each other. Hard to explain in words.

Bottom line, I would highly recommend one. My second favorite is the Cammenga.

I just picked that up about 4 months ago as well. I have the Inch version - not the Metric.

I love it. Easy to use, fast, dampens quickly, can be used for gradiation and the needle works everywhere in the world. Worth the money I think.

I own just about every type of compass (Recta, Silva, Brunton...) and the Suunto MC2 Global is by far the best in my opinion.

Mine gets used daily at work, it's the only one I trust....

Make sure when you buy it that the needle looks like this:

Notice that the Global needle has two slots in the needle at each end and the magnet hangs on a gimble at the centre. Recently while at my local outdoors shop I saw some marked as the global model but without the global needle, I am guesing that they were northern or southern hemisphere (solid needle) models packed in the wrong packaging.
