Compass Recommendations

+1! I've never owned a liquid filled compass that lasted more than a few years before developing a bubble. 'Course, it does give you an excuse to buy a new one every coupla years.:D

How many 'vintage' fluid compasses can you find listed on the 'bay?
The modern Cammenga mils are dry. No fluid to bubble.
Cammenga!
I have the phosphorescent one. Excellent compass. Needle settles in less than 2 seconds, accurate, easy to get a reading, made in America, waterproof, and durable enough to survive being accidentally dropped onto concrete from 10 feet (that's why you use the lanyard) Bulky and heavy, but woth every gram. You made a good choice. If you want a backup, the Silva Starter is a good one.

My Stocker & Yale phosphorescent (same as what the Camminga is now) is dated 11/86 and it's still going strong. I'm of an age now that I might buy a new Camminga tritium. I won't have to worry about it going dim before I do!:D

Whats a severed finger doing in that pic??

actually, you're right.
its actually Silva that owns Brunton. don't know how I could mess that up:jerkit:

oh well. I've never had a problem with my Brunton is all I can say

If I recall , usa silva is its own thing - manufactured by ? not sure - But NOT Silva AB ( sweden ) - They are silva everywhere else excempt USA & Canada - In that market Silva AB is sold as Brunton.

You can read about the trademark dispute on wikipedia.

I have a pile of compasses, and my current favorite is the Brunton 8040G. It's cheap, big, and durable (about $45). The same one, minus the sighting mirror, is the 9020G. It's also big and beefy, and probably the cheapest compass you can get that has adjustable declination (<$15). I have small Brunton ball compasses pinned on the shoulder straps of a lot of my packs and bags, as well as small base plate type compasses as back-ups inside the bags.

Stay sharp,
desmobob
