For boating use, West Marine used to sell a hand-held compass that was rated tops by "Practical Sailor" magazine (sort of the sailing equivalent to Consumer Reports). I've not seen one in a while, which is surprising considering that they were not terribly expensive (in boat dollars) and were so highly rated.
It was NOT this one.... It had more of a rectangular shape, so it was obvious from just the feel of it which direction you should point it. West doesn't actually manufacture a lot of their products, so someone else might still be making it.
Have you considered buying a pair of binoculars with the compass built-in? These are made precisely for what you say you're doing. PS rated these as the best.. http://www.adorama.com/FN750FMTRSX.html (PRICEY!)
