Competition among makers?

If you cut his fingers off with a bandsaw or "chop"saw....you could effectively take him out of the game....If I can find a volunteer at your hammerin, that would make a cool demo!

From consumer side it would be nice to see some..

I think he means competition in the way that industries like auto manufacturers compete, by offering discounted prices and perks to get you to buy their products.

That's the way I took the post as well Keith, however I don't think it valid as many if not most custom knife purchases in my opinion are not just about the product but about buyer/maker relationships as well.
In other words, collectors are buying the knife and maker so to speak.

I think that kind of competition would be awful for the custom knife industry, and in the long run, not good for the consumer.

Lorien, I'm not too enthused with her myself, but when I ran across that quote, I thought it pretty well summed up the way I look at knifemaking.

I figure that if I'm going to learn anything about this craft, I better surround myself with those who are a lot better than me and then just watch and listen. I can never even consider leading if I don't learn how to fallow at some point. I am very fortunate to have learned from some selfless bladesmiths who where willing to give me the time of day. It's how the trade continues and I will be obliged to share what has been passed along to me.

I think it is only proper to assume to pay an individual for instruction in any trade. What ever information the instructor chooses to relinquish for free is his prerogative. I can only assume that I should consider myself lucky with whatever information I receive that will advance my abilities, since this is how I make my living.
