I would like to purchase a custom competition cutter so I can go to my backyard and wack pumpkins and bottles, etc. What do you guys recommend? What are your opinions on competition cutters for playing in the yard?

I think they would do a great job of playing in the yard.

Check out knives by Reggie Barker, Lin Rhea, Daniel Winkler, Ed Schempp, Jim Crowell, Gayle Bradley and Warren Osborne. There are plenty of others, but those are all I can think of right now.

I second Burt Foster. You are likely to get a lot of bang for the buck, as well as something that looks really nice, with a really great sheath too.

Speaking of Blue Collar camp knives, I sure was sorry that I missed out when this gorgeous beast was posted on Burt's available page:

Somebody sure snagged a heck of a knife and a pretty terrific value.

Also add Matt Roberts, Shawn Ellis and Matt Lamey to the list.

The three choppers shown below were made by Edmund Davidson for his use
at the BLADE Show chopping competitions. The bottom knife, a Full Integral,
will be used by him during the June 2008 Blade Show chopping event.....

Not a custom, but designed by two of the best in the cutting comp world, Jim Crowell and Reggie Barker - marketed by Browning, this one can be had for about $150.

I have several customs that are made for what you want and more, but probably my personal favorite is this one by Tai Goo. Comes with a unique and practical scabbard.

Burt Foster. Here is my blue collar camp knife. I suppose I should have taken the cord out of the forward hole for the photo........but I didn't.

If you don't care about meeting the weight/blade length/overall length limits set on blade smith competition cutting, you might be interested in getting a Khukri. there is a sub forum here for Khukri's here.

I am told that they cut out of proportion to their size.

Oh, ya good pics all, and good list of makers to research too.

He was already mentioned in this thread.
Snagged this one from Bailey a little while back, right here in the Exchange.
Forged CPM 3V. 10" X 2" X .325,15" oal.

Snag something less spendy for use in the yard. You could get a cheap machete and smack away until you had zero energy left in your arm. Of course, if you could find one, I'd suggest a bowie by Don Hastings.

For a user with collectability potential, I would also go for a Burt Foster or Bailey Bradshaw (excluding some makers who specialize in unobtainium).

That Browning knife looks very nice.

That browning looks sweet. Jay Neilson has a few choppers that look like they would plow some wood.

There's so many makers currently producing excellent cutters, It would be hard to go wrong IMO. This thread is evident of that.

The popularity of the cutters seems to be on a rapid rise. I have sheathed seven in just the past few weeks, all from makers mentioned in this thread.

Interesting observation, Paul.

Here is one of Reggis Barker's that would certainly fit the bill.

And a matched set:

Shawn Ellis recently had this one up for sale:

There's a nice piece to be had on eBay right now - search for "Matt Lamey Recurve Bush Bowie".
