copy and paste this and fill in the blanks.

I'll start it off.

Country/State: Ireland

Blade Law: Balisongs, machetes, automatic knives, shurikens, push dagger (neck kife design usualy), belt buckle knife are all ilegal to own even on private property with no exceptions. Swords are ilegal but a very restrictive license may be aquired by highly ranked martial artists, unlikely but possible.
It is ilegal to carry any knife, sharp or pointed object in public places without "good reason" and if person is found with a sharp or pointed object they are immediatly guilty of an offence and may be arrested on spot and it is then up to the judge to decide if reason was good enough. In other words Guilty until proven innocent. The police use "common sense" in carrying of knives and generaly to have a knife or any size or design you must be working with it in job or hobby (electrician or fishing for example). EDCing a blade and "usefull" is not thought "good reason". Self defense with a knife outside private property is up to the judge but by law is ilegal.

Gun Law: Training license at 14 or full license at 16. License is difficult to get and every gun must be individualy licensed. EDC is ilegal guns may only be carried when hunting or at the range no other time. Rifles and shotguns are the main guns allowed handguns are near non existent. Guns must be stored unloaded in a safe when not in use. Self defense with a gun is only legal in your own home however you may be charged with reckless discharge of a firearm.

Other weapon/item Law: kubotons, telescopic bats/truncheons, pepper spray are all ilegal to own even in private property with no exceptions.

Self Defense Law: Carrying any object (regardless of object be it knife, gun, screwdriver or piece of wood) with the intention of self defense is ilegal. If you have a knife on you and use it for self defense outside your home you will most likely be charged for it.

Comments: Please note that machetes are ilegal to own no matter what and it is ilegal to carry any knife on you at all and self defense must be done pretty much bareknuckle.

Where is William Wallace when you need him?

How granular do we want to get? We Americans have 50 different sets of gun and knife laws, more if you count major cities.

glistam, however granular you want to get post whatever you want however little or in detail it be.
The Irish have Michael Collins instead of William Wallace. The confusions understandable.

Country/State: Arizona

Blade Law: As far as I know Anything goes . Switchblade heaven

Gun Law: Open carry OK, Concealed permits after training class

Other weapon/item Law: not sure

Self Defense Law: Lethal force for, self defense, attempted arson on an occupied building, sexual assault on a minor:thumbup:

Comments: Saw a typical "biker' dude in the grocery with a holstered auto pistol and silencer. Don't want to disturb the other shoppers

And, please thank Knife Rights for that. :D

Nope! Arizona has Constitutional Carry, so anyone legal to possess a gun or any weapon can carry concealed, no permit required. The only real advantages a CCW permit provides is that you can legally carry in a bar (as long as you do not consume alcohol) and reciprocity with those states where applicable.

I now want to move to Arizona! What's day to day crime and safety like there? Irelands towns/citys have alot of assault, harrasment and general antisocial behaviour and they can get away with it because the good people are unarmed and the asbos either take a kitchen knife with 3-5 friends or unarmed with 7-15 friends so its extremly unsafe to just walk outside the house. Does open carry and people being able to carry defensive items typicaly deter criminals?

Country/State: Barbados

Blade Law: open carry only allowed, folding knife, max blade length of 3 inches, you must be able to produce a valid reason for having it (example, working construction with a leatherman)

Gun Law: extremely restrictive, 6 month wait time or so on application for firearms license, each gun must be individually licensed, limited ammo allowed (i think 50 rounds per gun, anything over is an arrestable offence) brandishing is an arrestable offence, printing is considered brandishing.

Other weapon/item Law: if it can be considered a weapon, you can be charged for it, batons etc. strictly illegal, pepper spray illegal.

Self Defense Law: a bit tricky here.. generally speaking if it happens on your property, or if there is threat of life, you should be ok, but the legal process is long and drawn out.. and the laws are heavily biased towards women, my friend was arrested/charged with abuse, for defending himself against a woman attacking him with a metal spike. case currently ongoing but looking positive in his favor, due to the woman having a prior record for violent attacks.

Comments:

all this being said, how you carry yourself in public, your appearance etc have a lot to do with it, the police wont target you if you appear to be a decent person, dress like a gangster and have a pocketknife and you will be searched, i open carry (pocketclip visible is considered open) a pocketknife every day everywhere i go and have never had any problems, blade length is a bit over 3 inches also.

I believe the statistics support the contention that states with more concealed carry have lower crime. Not sure what effect open carry has on crime. As firearms sales have exploded over the past few years, crime rates have dropped, which pretty much blows away those who claim more guns equals more crime and more death.

Lol, coming from Ireland you might find the climate takes some getting used to.

I believe it's more complex than that, though given how contentious this topic is (and the fact this is a knife forum), that's all I'm going to say.

How is it more complex? If a criminal thinks he might get shot he'll stay away. More guns in the right hands (Sane American citizens) means safer lives for everyone except the violent and vicious, who gave up the right to life when they threaten anothers.

NEW YORK CITY

Carry a knife that can be spotted by an officer (ie: pocket clip) you WILL be arrested and incarcerated for that. Zero tolerance, conviction guaranteed, charge will not be reduced and will never be removed from your NCIC record.

The NYC law ( NYC Admin Code 10-133 &134) really isn't written that restrcitive. It simply says no knife can be exposed while carrying it ( there are exceptions), and it can not have a blade over 4". There are lots of places with worse laws than that. The NYS Penal Law is the model for many other states as it was one of the first laws banning switchblades and "gravity" knives in the US during the 50s. The issue lies in the fact that these laws are not enforced correctly in NYC ( and a few other parts of NY). Yes the NYPD wrongful feels all knives are illegal, and any knife that can be flicked open and locks has been deemed an illegal gravity knife even though this was never the intent of the law. The test of what it takes to flick the knife open does not exist, so a strong man who knows the right way to do it can get a knife to flick open than most other people could not open that way. If the written law was enforced correctly ( as it was for years), then NY would have decent laws. There are many other states that have laws saying "flickable" knives are illegal and some don't even require that it locks open....I hope this way of enforcing the written law does not spred elsewhere....

Aside from more guns not equaling more crime there is very little else that can be concluded with the available facts. Some metro areas with more open CC laws have more physical crime than some of the most restrictive metro areas (at least according the UCR). Consider, most victims of violent crime, homicide in particular, have a criminal record. If crooks aren't afraid to take a shot at a potentially armed rival, they're not likely to care who else might be armed while they do their thing. Deterrence will only work on property-type crimes, and even then the facts don't support that conclusion in anything approaching a universal manner. When crime rates go up or down as a general pattern, they tend to do so everywhere.

Chicago's 2.5 inch blade length limit is pretty bad... there are far more decent EDC knives over 2.5 inches than under.

Also if you want to carry within 1000 feet of a school you need one.
