Complaint about Rush/Tempest/Sirus

I love almost everything about these knives, especially since noticing one model was available with ATS34 (although I would rather see all of them that way).

There is one problem for me though. The safety latch is right where my thumb wants to go. How am I supposed to hold this thing? Does anyone else have a disagreement between the little metal wedge and their civilization digit?

I have been looking at buying one but have been mulling over this very thing. So thinking of shifting to the178 Adrenaline.

I own an ATS34 Sirus and I have a problem with the safety button, but my complaint is the fact that it won't stay off if the knife is upside down, meaning you have to pull it out of your pocket and point it up before gravity will keep the safety off and you can open the knife. :( I don't have a particular problem with its location other than that.

I have one of the ATS-34 Tempest's and I agree, the safety latch is down right irritating. I also find the liner lock protrudes too far from the frame and that is irritating to me also. Combine that with the skeletonized handle and pocket clip, and there are too darn many things poking and sticking your hand on this model. The ATS-34 blade is great, but that is about the only feature I can wholeheartedly endorse on the Tempest, and only some of them have that!

Well, look at it on the bright side. If enough people feel the same way we do about them, then Buck will more than likely make modifications or discontinue the line and we'll have very rare Buck folders!! :D

I havent seen one real close... Is the latch sticking up like a CRKT M16 Carson flipper?

;) I carry and use the Buck Rush every day and haven't found any problems with the safety latch. My thumb fits right in front of it and I feel like the little nub is extra security to keep it from slipping from my hands when wet. Maybe I've just gotten used to it.

And here I thought I was going to be the only one who felt this way! :D I'm in full agreement with Rudderjt about the Rush.

My Rush is a cool knife, sits well in my hand, and snaps open like an angry dog. I removed the clip so it is loose in my pocket and I really like the safety lock. It is a comfort seeing as the knife is often in the immediate vicinity of a good friend of mine.

I have the Sirus, which is a larger knife than the Rush or Tempest, and I like the clip, particularly with the tip up configuration. The location of the safety button is no problem either. As Rudderjt said, my thumb fits right in front of the safety and it's no problem at all. I would however, like to be able to take the knife from my pocket and not have to worry about which way it's pointing to get the safety to stay off so I can open the blade. Is it supposed to be this way, where gravity keeps it on? If so perhaps I should send it in for correction. I hope someone can let me know if mine is the only one like that.

I have the Rush as well and don't have any problems with the location of the safety latch-mine also opens swiftly. Plus the ASAP system allows you to explain to everyone why it's not a switchblade!

You guys convinced me,,, I will be looking for one,,,maybe one each of these models.

Now, I'm curious. What arguments do you use for the fact that the ASAP is not a switchblade? I don't consider it to be and the question has never come up, but just in case it does, I want to be consistent with your explanations.

Guys, put aside your fears about the blade lock and asap release button being in the way. I stopped by the Buck knife booth at the NRA convention here in Houston today, and tried out all of the asap assist models. None were a problem as far as being uncomfortable or in the way. Yes, you know they are there but I liked that in a way, because I always knew where my thumb was in relation to the blade.

And those babies do open nicely.

I like the larger Sirus model with the ATS34 and the couple I bought has the Idaho tang. The Clip is rigged for tip up carry in a pants pocket which makes it readily accessable to operate. Does take a little pratice.

AND, CJ Buck was there signing them!!!

Oh,, I did look at a different brand that has a similar opening assist. It flew open so violently, I nearly lost control of it. I would recommend playing with these type knives in person before you go buying one off ebay. There are a lot of differences.

Mike K,,,,The Sirus I bought today has definite "clicks" on the lock release. Where ever I set it,, it stays in that position until I move it. If yours doesn't do that, might consider sending it in.

I hate to keep beating on this thread, and maybe should have started a new one, but want to throw out that these knives (at least the Sirus) still have a thumb stud. So if the lock is off, you have an option of using the thumb stud or the top release. Some may not know that.

I still have more playing to do, but it seems that when I use the thumb, the blade opens much harder than with the top release.
Still in the testing stage on that one.

Definitely not a complaint. It has become my edc, at least for this week :D :D

The thumb studs work better if you push forward rather than with an outward motion.

After reading this thread I actually took my TNT out of my pocket and replaced it with a 295 Tempest. I want to give it a test drive for a few months and see how it does.
The lock should not flop back and forth with gravity. I spoke to Jeff Hubbard, our Quality department guy, and he said you can often fix this problem by tightening either the blade pivot screw or the body fastener located behind the lock. If this does not work, send it in and we will do what we need to do to make it right.
Hope this helps,

Joe
You are going to love that Tempest so much so much you will want a Sirus. Probably won't ever go back to that "other" one. So tell ya what I will do. Just send that other one to me and I will send you a brand new Sirus!!! But Wait!!! It is signed by CJ Buck!!! all the better!!! :D :D

I know....dream on.....

Joe,
That's interesting. Since I've been having difficulties with my new Sirus 298, I started carrying my TNT. Thanks to Jeff's advice, my Sirus is now working great. A simple half turn on the pivot screw did the job. By the way, for what it's worth, I really like the tip up carry. I'll second what LFH just said. Get the Sirus (298 w/ ATS34 steel) and you'll love it. :D :D
You guys keep up the great work!
Mike
