Complaint about Rush/Tempest/Sirus

How is the safety working on your Sirus now?
I am thinking of getting a Tempest since I can't find my Ken Onion.

Like the clip position and assisted feature along with the Buck quality I am certain that will be great.

My concern is the position of the safety that folks have mentioned in this thread and the safety gravity effect (that you fixed and wondering if it still works).

Thanks,
Goose.

The position of the safety on the Sirus is no problem at all. It does however become lose over time and needs periodic tightening. In all fairness to Buck though, I have refrained from sending it in for them to correct until I drive over to their plant later this yerar. New models may not have any problem at all. I believe that they corrected the problem since they had so many complaints early on.

Thanks Mike,
Perhaps I will wait until I can see one IRL. Problem out here is that not too many stores that carry a good selection of Bucks...so, online may be my only option.
Kind Regards,
Goose.

Well, I have had my 298GY Sirus for about a month now (thanks to my Rodent buddy) and I have to say it is probably the one that gets used most in my EDC rotation.
Have searched the forum but couldn't find anything definitive to answer this question:

Sirusly, what is it that makes an Assisted Opener different than a switchblade? Is it the thumb stud?

Curious Goose.

BTW, I tuned the safety and blade release speed to the sweet spot of my liking. One is related to the other as the adjustment of the pivot torx affects both. I found the position of the torx that I liked best, counted the turns while I twisted it out, added a drop of contact cement (or ya could use Loc-Tite), counted the turns of the torx when I put it back in. Let it dry. Perfect.

yup, love my Sirus 298 w/ATS-34 made in the good ole USofA with BOS flamin' :D
(it replaced my kershaw boa that almost cut my fingers off when the blade collapsed on me in the middle of a hurricane :( )

I've never seen a Sirus...does it have a spring assist to pop the blade open???

Ya know ChickenTrax, I don't know the internal mechanics of how it works. There is a safety cam on the back that engages the blade when closed. It's spinelss in that there is no middle spacer...it used the width of the blade at the front, two spacer bushings near the rear, and the safety cam itself to set the width. The blade is opened by pulling back the hump integrated on the back of the blade near the pivot point, or by thumbstud.
Liner lock.
Guessing that if you had one you would be field stripping it blindfolded.

Buchaholic....it has a coil spring to assist the opening.....the legal way around the switchblade classification is all about the fact you have to over come resistance to open the knife before the spring takes over, and you are using a trigger or thumb stud on the blade and not a button, lever or other device in the handle.....it is all in the words. Kershaw sent a letter to all 50 state's to ask it they where legal years ago. Back then they the answer was yes, but they have been deemed illegal in some states since then. Good old Illionios hit Walmart with a large fine for selling them about three years ago.....

Thanks Tom19176...

Makes sense. So, it seems, that if you are pushing the blade manually to intitialize the release then that is the ticket.
California is whacky about a ton of stuff, so I am certain there would be questions or ambiguity with Johnny Law.
Hey, BTW, what were the results of the Walmart and Illinois gig?
Thanks Again...

Walmart lost and therefore if you shop there it says under all the assisted openers "not avialable in all states"...they had to pay a fine of several thousand dollars and remove the knives from their stores in the state....if you look under the "knife Laws" section in this forum you will see the writings from a guy named Clark...he knows the California laws...

I just got a Sirus 297DP yesterday and so far so good. The safety was a lil loose out of the box aswell but a quick turn of the pivot screw and all is good. I will carry this around and see how it is in place of my boker magnum mini. So far, my only gripes....it's a heavy knife and suited as a "lefty" pocket carry. (i usually carry in my right pocket) the way the clip is positioned...it just doesn't carry too nice in the right pocket.

here's a pic: Top: Sirus 297DP, Bottom: Boker Magnum Mini

Hi Tripz...
Today I was out with some of my buds celebrating Easter by feeding the old, homeless, and wino (some are one, some are all of those items mentioned) peeps at a breakfast benefit, which, happily, was held at a bar.

Had KP and, after reading your post earlier, thought I'd try the Sirus 298GY in my left pocket. Extracted more than a dozen times cutting stuff and it just wierd having it on the left.

There is no way I can find that to work. How you think it is a lefty and not a righty is beyond me.
Just thought I'd chime in!

Happy Thugs Bunny Day!
Goose.
