Complete history of Bowie knife

But then how did people at the time use their Natchez Bowies to chop down trees and make kindling when they were camping?
They didnt, but they dreamt of leaving their axes behind and chopping trees with knives. It was the only thing occupying their minds, as they lay sobbing and curled up in balls at night: "Cant somebody hurry up and invent CPM3V, for Scagels sake!!"

What dark ages those must have been.

Well first off I have Bowie #1 somewhere inmy house. I also still have the meteorite that Black chipped a chunk off of. He got that cosmic chunck from a guy named Rasafrei I think. ;)

CS cable tang Bowies are not made for batoning. Most everything can be broken and the cable tangs are not made for hammering on the handle with a length of cordwood .

To be honest, I wouldn't expect piece of wire to hold handle on large knife, such as Bowie and was very surprised by this style....if you or anybody here knows more about this construction method than I have to ask question - what are the pros of it???

My only conclusion so far is that this is the way of saving on material and I see it as a pure shortcut, simply cheaper way to make knife....when it comes to traditional construction of Bowie knife, there are variety of tangs, from rat tail stick tang,up to full flat tang, but I never heared or read of cable/wire instead of tang, until I read about Cold Steel flagship bowies....

So if you or anyone can explain, whats behind this method of fixing handle and what are it's pros if any?

Fer crying out loud, do you even READ the posts you quote.....!!!!!!!!

The cable-tang process is actually more expensive than a standard full tang (or a push tang).
The cable makes the handle lighter, giving the blade more weight - actually making it a little more lively in the hand and adjusting the balance point.
It also distributes shock through the handle. This is particularly useful as the Natchez handle material is hard - It's easier on your hands as well as the handle material.
These design choices were made to make the Natchez a faster, more lively and more effective fighting knife.
It's a specialized tool.
However, as I said before, I've seen the Natchez take some tremendous abuse - we actually shot our new Proof videos a few weeks ago and I saw that knife go through hell.
We test everything to breaking point and that cable tang just didn't break. I have every confidence in it's durability.
CAN it be broken? For sure. I'm pretty sure anyone can eventually break anything :D
I just haven't seen it happen...

Yes,I do.....

"It also distributes the shock through the handle"- seem only genuine reason to me...

"I am pretty sure anyone can eventually break anything" - yes, that is also truth, but seem like an excuse statement in this case for cable instead of traditional fixed tang.

Sorry but I'm still very sceptical of this idea of construction and I can be wrong.

Well...I am convinced! If we only had that first link at the very beginning of the thread, we could have not wasted all this time talking about punales, and Searles, and Clifft, and Forrest and all that nonsense!

James Black invented the Bowie knife and it looked like this.

So, since you have never heard of it, and dont understand it, it is a "pure shortcut."

I'm out. Pointless.

Do you understand what the balance point of a knife is, and why it would be different on some knives than on others depending on what purpose the knife is designed for? You are the one going on about the back cut.

Crimony. I gotta get outta here.

When, on that page, they say, "Unfortunately, the material is drawn entirely from Raymond Thorp's book Bowie Knife, which includes many apocryphal tales." what they mean by "apocryphal tales" is "delusional made up nonsense."

I will attempt to stay out of this "Apocryphal Tales of Bowie Knife" thread you want.

Nobody is forcing you to argue over the topic, I personally thank you for your participation, but if you do not wish to add anymore from your own knowledge here,it is your own will...

More folklore and legend accounts.

The Bowie is seen by us in America like the Japanese see the Katana--something that imbues on the wielder a legendary power, the ability to levitate, ability to cut down multiple assailants without breaking a sweat. The powers are of supernatural origin and allow anyone to fight off hoardes. It can deflect machine gun bullets as well.

The truth is, both are just slabs of steel with an edge. Shrouded in legend and folklore, yes. But still just a piece of steel. Most people would probably end up cutting themselves to shreds with their own blade if they actually swung it around in a fight.
