Compression lock... is it the same as a liner lock?

Any problems with blade play on compression locks? I have only handled one, a new ATR, and it had noticeable vertical play. Maybe it was an isolated case.

Well, blade play to some can actually be them flexing the blade by really pulling and pulling hard on a blade. If you want no movement in any direction buy a fixed blade. Anything that moves and wear will eventually develop gaps where slight movement can take place. This is where a quality products are important IMO.

Through the years there have been a few that have had vertical play, I remember the P1 had a few mentions, lately with the new pivot design some side to side has been mentioned, however I have never heard of one failing.

It is a good lock, excecuting sound principles in lock design, even with play it won't just fail. The lock has to deform or shear the stop pin really and by that time one should know you should be using another tool.

My Superhawk, Superleaf, Couple paras, and Yo2 don't have any play. I do have a gray para with the tiniest bit of blade wobble(side to side).

The only issue I have had with Comp locks is stickiness. My para 2 was sticky enough that I couldn't disengage the lock one handed, I had to hold the knife with one hand to apply enough force to unlock it with my other hand. Apparently thats not normal, but it did color my impression of the lock for a bit. After reading more, I think I need to handle a properly executed one so I can see what the buzz is about. Till then, it's Axis Locks and Triad locks for me.

Not sure but I think the joints in my fingers will wear out before the compression lock in my P2. I seriously annoy my wife with opening/closing the thing while watching TV.
In my humble opinion the only lock that maybe stronger is the TriAd lock on Cold Steel knives.
