Computer Gurus - Pls help with USB prob

USB 2.0 devices should work fine with a properly functioning USB 1.0 card. The only difference between them is the transfer speed, with USB 2.0 being significantly faster. If a USB 2.0 devices is attached to a USB 1.0 slot it will just transfer data at the lower speed of the USB 1.0 card.

To clarify, based on a technicality:

Most of the older USB ports are USB 1.1, not 1.0. The 1.1 ports are around 10 times faster than the 1.0, and good luck finding drivers if your ports are actually 1.0 (I used to have an old machine with 1.0 ports). 1.0 is old enough that you probably have never seen USB 1.0 ports, thankfully. 1 Kb/s is not fun.

Best option for getting them to work is to upgrade the OS.

Gosh, they can´t be that old, I have a Windows 98 machine that doesn´t have USB ports at all (well I also have a Commodore 64 and the first Windows I used was Windows 286).

My point is that he can have anything even no USB ports at all, I think there used to be serial to USB adapters or something like that. Maybe it´s time to get a new PC, but you don´t have to throw the old one away.
