Right now I use Norton on my computer.

And I was wondering if there is something better or even free that I could use to protect my computer?

Any advice about this would be appreciated.

I can use a computer - but I'm not a real smart person about computers....

Thanks for the help,

I use the free version of avast (avast.com) on my home computers and it works just fine for me.

get MSSE (microsoft security essentials)
its free and very good, as long as you have a legit copy of windows

The ones mentioned so far are good I have used them all... On my personal computer right now the combo i'm running is AVG for anti virus, ZoneAlarm for firewall, and I use ccleaner about once a month to do a clean up. All of which are free

+1 on the free Avaste. It is good for one month but if you register it with an email acct, then they will send you a code to unlock it for a year! I have never had any issues with it. :D

Just downloaded Avast for free - and registered it.
I can upgrade for $29.00 a year.....?
That's better than the $60.00 a year Norton was charging.

Thanks again.

You dont need to upgrade unless you wanna add features. By registering and entering the code it gives you coverage for a year! Then each year, just re-register, which is good for another year. I have used it for years on many pc's as I have a few! LOL

I'd second microsoft security essentials along with something like malwareblaster and ccleaner. As long as your not doing something that could potentially infect your computer (illegal downloads) you should be set with that combo.

All free too.

Microsoft security essentials is also a good program for antivirus. I will mention to pay attention to Avast when you log on your computer. The fact that it is so popular also makes it a target for malware. The virus database behind it updates on a near daily basis. If it appears to not have updated for some time (more than two weeks), you may want to consider scanning for malware (malware bytes is a good program) because the first thing most malware does is disable updates to your antivirus.

I'm not a computer security expert, but I am a computer engineer so I try to keep up to date on a lot of this.

I have used nod32 from Eset for years. It has served me well, but it is a pay product. We use the anti-virus only it will not bog down your system. Microsoft security essentials is the best free product out there. Nobody knows how to implement better on Windows than Microsoft. And price is right.

Apple has been frequently the first to fall in the Pwn2Own contest. Security by obscurity is no security at all. As the apple user base increased so have the attacks. With both Windows and OS X being hardened against these attacks. Hackers have been moving to lower hanging fruit. Vulnerabilities in applications that don't get as much update attention as they should. Latest examples the many holes in PDF reader, flash, and Java. And don't forget social engineering. Oh you have an infection!! Run this program now. Or A phone call from Microsoft saying We see problems on your computer let us login to correct this. Microsoft will not call about them monitoring your computer for strange activity.

I used AVAST and eventually deleted it due to service problems. I got a virus or malware that was really messing my computer up. I called AVAST (apparently out sourced to India). They told me $250 to fix it. Argued forever about having paid for Avast and all I got was pay $250 to fix it. Delete Avast and now have Norton Internet security and haven't had a problem since plus I have windows essentials.

Well I had a problem with my computer with Norton......
Called them - and it was out sourced to India (could hardly understand them)
And they charged me about $159.00 to fix it.....
So we will see?

And now days it's not about the service - it's all about the dollar.....:grumpy:

I ordered Viper Security Suite off of QVC or HSN or SNBC (sorry, don't recall which) and replaced my AVG. The past 4 months VIPER has run excellently and just as unobtrusive as AVG. It also supplies 5 computers. I like it so far.
