Computer protection?

So right now I'm using McAfee, provided by Comcast, but I just found out that they're going to be switching to Norton. I've heard that Norton isn't a very good security system, so what free security system would you recommend?

If you are a gamer/power user: AVG
If you are a regular user/non-computer savvy: Avast! Antivirus.

If you are VERY computer saavy, AVG+Hijackthis+sysinternals suite (the latter 2 tools being non-definition based methods of locating and disabling evil programs. With them I can remove any virus. That being said, I've been removing viruses for 10+ years. Don't use the tools without testing them on a system you don't care about for a while, or set up a virtual machine to play around in.)

In my long term use of both programs, I have discovered that Avast will stop anything.

AVG has had problems in the past (read, 5 years ago), but is pretty solid program now.

No AV program will beat safe browsing habits. Install firefox+adblock+noscript to minimize your threat profile online.

Just out of curiosity, why is AVG for gaming/power using, and Avast! for regular use? I'm not very tech savvy, but I like to think I know something about computers :p. I use firefox and adblock right now, but what does noscript do?

The Avast on demand scanner tends to scan WoW and all the files it accesses a lot while active. This causes some major FPS drops when least wanted. AVG goes with a scan once policy.

I also assume the non-savvy computer user hates reinstalling windows. Avast! has a VERY impressive virus recovery protocol that can revert infected files to a non-infected state. This too happens to be a resource hog, making it unwanted for the power user/gamer but perfect for the average user that hates downtime.

noscript is an extension for firefox that disables all javascript. It then adds a very painless method of whitelisting the websites you actually need javascript enabled on.

EDIT: for more fun on the AV front, check out http://virusscan.jotti.org/en

This website will let you upload a file and scan it for viruses. It does so by submitting the file to every major AV company's online scanner and replying with the results (obviously, don't send large files to it :))

AVG has a smaller footprint, meaning it uses less system resources, allowing you to devote more power to gaming/power using.

I do a lot of pc fixing for people, and here is the best FREE combo IMHO.

AVG
Windows Defender
Spybot Search and Destroy
Malwarebytes

Microsoft Security Essentials

I've isntalled this on over 3 dozen computers for different clients and they have not reported any problems or infected machines. I guess different people will suggest different things. This is just something that has worked for me. AVG is good, but it lacks a lot of updating. It used to be better pre 8.0 versions.

I've heard a lot of people say good things about MSE. I've yet to try it out, may load it onto virtual PC and throw some bugs at it to see what its got.

I have it on one of my PCs at home and so far so good. I like that it is a small non bloated program. On my main PC, I only trust Trendmicro. We use that at work on our network, the boss has had good experiences with it so far.
I have a couple clients that have small kids that play on the computer. they play all kinds of games and download problematic bloatware. Zwinky, etc.

So far I've downloaded Malwarebytes and noscript. I'm not sure whether to download AVG or Avast! though, since I might start playing games.

I have had them all at one time or another. I use my PC for banking, shopping and most of all business and I need to be protected big time. I'm now using AVAST and have been for a long time and never had any issues. it's saved my PC more times than I care to remember. when ever I used the other programs they always let me down.

So you would recommend Avast! over AVG?

IMHO yes I would. some time ago I had tried Norton and it allowed some virus to get in and did some damage to my PC. a good friend who is in the computer repair business turned me on to AVAST. he told me some time ago about it but I didn't listen and wanted to try Norton Internet Security against his suggestion and shortly after I got the virus. $150 later and some information lost on my PC I listend and went with AVAST. like I said earlier it's been good with no issues.

AVG
Windows Defender
Spybot Search and Destroy
Malwarebytes

+1 on this list.

remember: the first line of defence for a computer is always going to be a user who keeps their security patches updated and doesn't click on dodgy links.

Also, do you use the free version or the paid one?

I had Spybot Search and Destroy before, but I ended up not using it much.

I downloaded the FREE version first and see if I like it. less than a year later I was so happy and impressed with it I bought the better/full package. I don't remember what I paid but it's like $50 or so a year I think. well worth it considering what's in my PC and what could be lost.

I also have the firewall on and use a firewalled router and never open or click on links from people I don't know very well when they send me emails. several times I clicked on a link to a site and the site tried to download spyware on my PC and the avast stopped it.

Ok, I'll probably get Avast! then. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone :).

At one time Norton was very invasive and a resource hog. I don't find that to be true anymore. I run Norton on my three machines and don't have any problems. If I understand you correctly, Comcast will be providing Norton for free? I'm not sure that you have a problem.

Yup, they're replacing McAfee with it. I've heard bad things about Norton in the past, that's why I wanted something else.

In the past I would have agreed. I currently run Norton Antivirus with no issues.

As an aside, here is a website that does comparisons of AV software that isn't behind a paywall: http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/main-tests

And on Norton/Symantec software, I've uninstalled too many failed copies of it to even think of advising someone to use it. Which is funny, because their enterprise software is top-notch. For some reason they feel they must unleash the bloat on consumers though :grumpy:

If they've changed, great. I still refuse to buy any symantec product or advise anyone to use said products.
