Computer protection?

So right now I'm using McAfee, provided by Comcast, but I just found out that they're going to be switching to Norton. I've heard that Norton isn't a very good security system, so what free security system would you recommend?

Being brutally honest here , if you really want protection use Symantec Endpoint.

There was a time when I would not touch Norton , now Symantec have redeemed themselves.

The free and cheap antivirus are better than nothing of course but this is like comparing an Mtech to a Strider. AVG is **** as is mcafee , avast , clam , komodo etc.

You get what you pay for.

Switched to AVAST from AVG about 8 months ago after an issue with a virus. First time AVG had ever failed me, but avast came through. I believe avast free WILL scan for rootkits, while avg will not... Although avast doesnt have a scheduler that I am aware of.

I've been running for 5 years without protection and not a single problem.

the last couple of computers ive fixed have had some form or another of virus protection and it didnt help a thing.

the last time i ran symantec, it expired rendering it useless and then decided to pop-up every hour telling me it had expired. and it continued to use resources, this is just as annoying as a virus to me.

nothing beats proper education and reasonable use.

AVG does have a rootkit remover. It's a separate download.
