Computer Suggestions

mac's are no fun...sure they look cool but you can't upgrade a mac like you can with a pc...they used to be more stable compared to a pc...but i think since windows released XP the stability problem has been solved...i've not crashed my PC since i installed XP a couple of years back...

DON'T GET A MAC...unless you're some arty farty dude...
Even now the tv and video industry are using pc's for their movies...

PC Advantages
-easily upgradeable
-more software
-more hardware choices
-more games
-cheaper

as long as you use XP you should have no problems...

if i had a pile of $hit 3ft high in my yard and you had a pile 20ft high-would that mean you had better $hit or just more of it---and i`ve never been called arty farty before atleast not by a dip$hit from the u.k., the imacs and emacs are not very upgradeable(, but the towers are as upgradeable as any p.c.-just higher quality and they look a hell of a lot better-obviosly doesnt hold much weight in the u.k.(but who cares what the @#$%! they think in the u.k.) the mac is another viable alternative--by the way ever look at the upgrades available on a lamborghini-compared to a pos camaro-a whole lot more people have camaros-i`ll bet there is a lot of them in the u.k.:D

Iam adding to this post even though i addressed this in a later post. to all people of the u.k. I apologize for the generalized statements contained in this post, i acted out of haste and misunderstanding, thanks, michael::)

If I didn't have so much invested in Windows based application software, I would buy a Mac tower. Windows XP is finally a pretty stable OS but, OS X on the Mac has all the benefits of Unix like core like Linux.

If Apple didn't price gouge, they would sell a ton more hardware then they do now. Too bad they aren't price competitive. Then they would sell more machines to users who would buy applications so, vendors would compile them for Mac OS X, instead we are stuck with Windows based kludges.

no question they are not competitive-i waited till just before new models came out and saved a lot of money-was outdated when i purchased but more than enough to meet our needs-not for everyone-gadget freaks and gamers have a lot more choices with p.c.`s, but like knives, high end audio and video, and other hobbies, its what your into and willing to spend-it goes back to the guy who carries a pos knife-he will never understand terms like fit and finish, s30v,titanium this or that-i cant think of a single product that i couldnt knock for being too expensive or not like mine,or why would you need that? thats what i have inlaws for-most people who knock macs have never used one-:)

Then why do I use the macs at my office daily and the PC with Premiere once a week, if that?

While XP is much more stable than it's counterparts, it's a far cry from Mac OS X. It took over a year for my Mac at home to crash. In nine months my Graphics Macs have been completely stable. Can't nearly say the same for our editing PC on Windows XP.

I used to want a PC for gaming, but lately I find I'm not at home nearly enough to justify it. Everything else I'd want to do, my Mac can handle.

WHAT'S UP WITH YOU DUDE?
It wasn't meant as an insult to people who use macs...it's just in the arts and design industry they prefer MACS...
Arty farty is not an insult!!! Sorry if you feel that way...
I'm just saying if you wanna do creative stuff then you should consider a MAC...

This is what i don't like about people who own macs...they're over protective...they just can't accept that a PC might be superior...they say everything about stability and stuff like that...but when someone says that their PC is stable they'll say their mac is more stable...i have no problems with my PC and so do a lot of other people...and i've heard a lot about people crashing their macs...
MACS have their own advantages but so does a PC...

And about quality and looks...man....beauty is in the eye of the beholder...you ever seen an ALIENWARE PC????? They are way better looking than a MAC...They have great systems there...

And don't give me some BS about MACS being as upgradeable as a PC...you know deep in your heart they don't have as many stuff for macs as they do for the PC...

And what kind of idiot compares a computer to a car?? It's totally different...

YOU CAN BASH THE UK HOWEVER MUCH YOU WANT...i'm not even british...i'm here to finish up my degree...that's it....

Oh and one more thing...have a check on what the movie studios are using for their special effects...i don't really know but i'm thinking a lot of studios are changing to PC's now...mostly Linux based...

i have seen the alien ware pcs, they do look pretty cool, depending on the environment, look at a mac tower and tell me which one you would want in a professional environment or even your home depending on what you like-and as for the ANALOGY of cars hey dude you just did`nt get it. i have no fude with the uk, so i will officially apologize to all concerned on that insult. and the mac towers are available with any and all components that would make them worthy competition for any gamers pc-but they are pricey-i do wonder how much you save by purchasing a pc at half the cost and then spend double that to make it work the way you want it-as for the arty farty comment- sounds like i took it the wrong way- for that i apologize, i am still intitled to have an opinion about a mac, which is what this post was about to start with, something for the originator of the post to think about. i also started by saying that there was more STUFF available for the pc`s. i did not make my statement standing on a bandwagon, but from personal(daily)experience. and i will add that thanks be to mac for their stability-that pc`s are starting to be stable(keeping up with the jones`), macs are not everything to everyone but hold there own in all formats not because their are so great, but because the competition is not so great. quantity over quality rules the day, followed closely by ignorance and closed minded loyalty:)

no troubles...

i'd like to have MAC's for certain apps. if possible...
it's just that on normal day to day basis i'd rather be using a PC...

but if i were gonna get a MAC it'd have to be one of those G5...can you imagine that...dual 2GHz processors...and it's able to run on 8gb memory...

but one thing i can't fault with apple...they make bloody good monitors...those widescreen mac monitors are a beauty...

but i still won't use a mac as my main machine...i need my shoot 'em ups...DOOM 3 where are you????

:)

for the record: before i purchased a mac, i had narrowed my choices down to dell and alien, and was saving up for the alien ware pc. the imacs we purchased were simple and compact(also got a great deal) and we had a friend who was literally an expert in macs who was more than willing to help us get started, i worked with him everyday and any and all questions were delt with immediately. the first thing i had to deal with after purchasing a mac was the software availability issue-there is in my mind plenty of it , just have to order it online-cant go to best buy or whatever-but am completely satisfied with the software-especially the operating system(os x). we are novice users, but we use them everyday and are happy campers:) no troubles, enjoyed the post and only hope that people realize there is a choice and look before disregarding a pretty good(not perfect) alternative in the mac

Here is my opinion:
Build yourself a X86 based system (P4, Athlon). The P4 is great if you use SSE2 optimised software (like Prime95 and some 3D games). For 99% of the rest, Athlon is a major "bang for da buck". Look at the price of an Athlon XP 2800+ then look at the price of a 2.8GHz P4.

Get:
-the processor
-a good cooler
-a good tower (stable power supply, good airflow)
-a decent motherboard with integrated sound chipset
-good memory, at least 512Mb
-a big HDD (120G or more)
-the cheapest DVD burner out there that can do DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW (the expencive ones don't do better)
-the graphic card of your choice (with or without TV-IN)
-a 17" LCD screen that can do 20ms refresh rate
-a operating system (Windows, Linux, your call)
-the keyboard, mouse, etc...

Have fun putting it together and you will have a good computer for the same cost you can buy a low grade system. You might consider buying the processor, motherboard and processor fan from the same source and ask them to assemble for you. Processors are quite fragile, I ruined one myself when I tried to put on the fan.

EVEN MY WIFE PUT ON HER OWN COOLERMASTER FAN ON HER ATHLON WITH NO PROBLEMS...

the tricky part is the thermal grease...

the only regrety i have with my computer choice was the missed opportunity to build one myself-looking at the recommended web pages there is everything you need, less the software but even then you get what you want instead of stuff you may never use, may still do this one day--something to do with my kids(we home school) and this would be an excellent project:D

Your wife rules :D

The proc that I ruined was a Duron. Ironicly it was not the first AMD proc I mounted. I switched it from my old MB to the new one while waiting for the new Athlon I ordered on the net. I don't know if the core chipped when I took the cooler off (a Taisol something) or when I put it back ... anyway the proc was dead. The metallic spring-thingies on that cooler are too freakin' hard, you must push like a maniac to get them where you want.
