this actually wouldn't be that far fetched. not quite like Sulu's, i think his folded out laterally, but like an expandable baton (like you said). if it had 3 sections with ONLY the last one being a blade, the other 2 being tubes, and it had a push button release like the Mondanock batons, i think it would be quite doable. i also think it would be totally badazz and on my must buy list

Personally I think that would be nothing more than a bladed club, and I'm not sure how you'd keep the blade from dulling as it slid inside the tube.

Here's a historical example of a true belt sword. Like most completely bizarre edged weapons, it's Indian.
