A .45ACP will not reliably stop a bear. Go with a .357magnum revolver instead. You can use .38special up to some pretty decent hunting loads in full house .357 - far more adaptable to what you are describing than an automatic cartridge.

if you want a semi auto, IMI Desert Eagle make a 357mag with a 9 rounds magazine....you can have a 6" or 10" barrel ...........
Just a thought !!

Sat. I shot the XD9; upon TTDs good words on it I had to try it out, loved the grip angle and texture; its trigger pull was smooth and had a "expectable" break to it.
The only thing that bothered me would just be an issue of my lacking range time with that weapon, its recoil was snappy to me.
The main reason I am leaning toward the glock over the XD at this point is the appeal of ruggedness. One case in point would be the Glock XD shoot off by Nutnfancy; the XD has two f.t.e. during the range time, they attributed the discrepancy to a lack of proper lubrication. Understandable, and as I keep my weapons, that would not be an issue.
As for 40. rather than 45. I was leaning toward the 45. due to my desire to not accumulate a large amount of firearms, I really only need three weapons; Shotgun, Pistol and a 308 rifle. The pistol, I need to fill different roles, from the ability to be concealed to the power of stopping a bear. That is why I felt the 45 to be a good medium ground.

I have been through two XD's both 4", one in 9 amd the other in .40. I got rid of them due to the "snappiness". A lot of people think the ergos are better on the XD's, which I did too and still think they feel better in hand until you start shooting them. The grip angle of the glock is actually made the way it is to purposefully make you lock out your wrists and have them at such an angle to counter any snappiness before you pull the trigger. I now carry a G23 and a G17. I would not worry about the ruggedness being your deciding factor, XD's will hold there own right next to Glock. Even Glocks will hiccup if they are bone-dry, which you already stated you won't do with your guns, problem solved:thumbup:
Now as for this bear issue, being as you want a concealable .45 I would first say get a G36 all day. But if you want something for protection against a bear I don't know if the 7 rounds of .45 will accomplish that task. Just my opinion, I spent thousands on pistols before I finally got my glocks, mainly xd's and kimbers, and a couple others. Glock is what I finally found to be the perfect pistol, for me! Good luck!
Thanks a ton for that response!
+10 rep for you
I got a feeling ive already made my mind up on the Glock36, im just needing some range time with it to be positive with spending that type of cash on a weapon, Thanks again boss.
Another piece of advice would be once you decide on a gun for sure, start checking pawn shops and gun shops that carry used guns. I got my Glock 23 in a pawn shop that had maybe 25 rounds through it for 400 out the door. Also I would look at gunbroker.com, it's like ebay for guns. The only thing is you have to find an FFL in your area that you can have it shipped to then pay shipping and then the transfer fee, but sometimes the deals are good enough to offset those expenses. That is how we found my wife's pistol, an M&P Compact 9mm, for a great price. (Another brand you might want to look at) I am thinking of actually getting another one for me.
Sound advice for sure, a family member of mine is all about the M&P 40. he is trying to find a good deal on one currently; he has a 1917 M/96 he is trying to trade for one before decides to go out and drop coin on one. Ive heard many good things about them.
I'm a Glock guy, however I will still recommend the M&P, so long as it is a no-internal lock, no-magazine disconnect version. Yuck.
I carry a G19, G30SF, or S&W 442, and am planning on getting a S&W 640PD.
I have a VA CCW permit, and am looking at the out of state FL permit.
I also keep a G21SF with a TLR-1 as my bedside gun. My BOB/Patrol bag is equipped with a H&K USP45.
I have an XD 40 and the recoil is very snappy.
